Yemen Police Fire on Protesters in South

VOA News April 03, 2011

Police in Yemen fired on anti-government protesters in the city of Taez south of the capital Sanaa.

Witnesses and medical officials says more that a dozen people were injured Sunday after police fired live rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowds.

On Saturday, Yemen's opposition leaders urged President Ali Abdullah Saleh to hand over power to his vice president and step aside.

It was the first time the opposition had presented a proposal that could bring an end to the bloody anti-Saleh protests that broke out in late January.

The opposition plans call for Saleh's vice president, Abd al-Rab Mansur al-Hadi, to act as temporary president and oversee the restructuring of the army and security forces.

President Saleh has offered to hand over power after new elections are held, possibly before the end of his current term in 2013. He has been in power for 32 years.

The Yemeni opposition also demanded the formation of a presidential council to lead the country for a six-month transitional period. It says it is seeking eventual constitutional reforms and new elections.
