Japan's Post-Bubble Rallies: A Long-Term Perspective

Japan's Post-Bubble Rallies: A Long-Term Perspective
April 3, 2010  new update

Note from dshort: Earlier today I posted an update on the Nikkei following the March 11 earthquake. Let's now put the recent index behavior in a long-term perspective. Here is a look at the Nikkei 225 which gives an overview of the cyclical rallies and their duration during Japan's secular bear market, now in its 21st year.

I've been posting weekly updates of a mega-bear market charts (here and here) that include Japan's Nikkei 225. In addition, every few months I update an inflation-adjusted overlay of the Nikkei 225 and S&P 500 bubbles.

The table below documents the advances and declines and the elapsed time for each cycle. Nikkei 225 Advances and Declines

The Truth About Japan's Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Disaster

March of 2011 may end up setting records when it comes to devastating disasters. Earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, extreme weather and more. However, nothing really comes close to the two edged threat caused by the March 12, 2011 Earthquake which may be one of the most severe of all time. Rated at between 9.0 and 9.4, depending on who you listen to, the quake and subsequent aftershocks have caused 310 billion dollars in damage as of this writing, thousands of lives with over six thousand dead and seventeen thousand people still missing. It had also created a potential nuclear nightmare.

The first fruit of the earthquake was a huge tsunami which stretched from the orient, all the way to the west coast of the United States. America managed to avoid the kind of wholesale destruction seen in Japan. The Japanese are known for being prepared when it comes to such things as earthquakes, but this one caught them off guard. It was just too powerful and created the additional nightmare of a tsunami that came ashore with heights that ranged from thirty to eighty feet.

Earthquakes that happen under the sea often create the most damaging tsunami waves. Waves of that type can be thirty to eighty feet high when they hit shorelines. The speed and power of the tsunami wave is irresistible and devastating to anyone and anything in its path. Ships, land vehicles, buildings and people are often tossed about like tiny toys in a bathtub. Even the natural shape of the land can be altered by the power of this phenomenon. In the aftermath of the huge waves, the receding water can easily draw people and things out into the ocean.

Residents of towns along the Japanese coast had little time to prepare for what would become record-setting wave heights that worked their way inland, past areas thought to be tsunami safe. One wave that was twenty-three feet high raced ashore at the speed of a jumbo jet and managed to get six miles inland before it began to recede. People, vehicles and buildings of all sizes were laid waste by the giant waves. Nothing could stand up before this huge force of nature and survive.

Along with power outages, lack of clean water supplies, food shortages and thousands of dead bodies washing up on to the beaches of the Japanese coast, came the sudden possibility of a nuclear disaster. Several reactors and containment buildings for their spent fuel were damaged in the earthquake. Despite valiant efforts on the part of employees at several nuclear power generating sites, the threat looms worse than ever. Japan's Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, has become increasingly somber and pessimistic as he has addressed the Japanese People and the world.

The most frustrating thing for the average American is the inability of our national news media to speak the truth concerning the extent of the nuclear problem now facing Japan and the world. It's almost as if it either doesn't exist, or will never reach the shores of the Americas. Even religious leaders and broadcasters seem to be ignoring the nuclear situation. Most of them are more focused on using the earthquake and tsunami as fundraising tools for their individual programs and worldwide ministries.

Several days after the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, one national religious broadcaster was in the midst of an annual fundraising effort. Although they run a text graphic at the bottom of the screen asking people to pray for the Japanese, they did not mention the twin disasters during their live show and made no mention whatsoever of the nuclear threat posed by the power plants that were damaged. Instead, the preacher in charge asked people to send him ten dollars for a new internet ministry to receive financial blessings. If you didn't have the ten dollars, he suggested that folks go to their neighbors, borrow the money and send it off to him.

It's time for people to understand what is really happening in Japan. Within forty-eight hours of the earthquake, a spokesperson for the Union of Concerned Scientists appeared on The Today Show and stated that the area around the Fukishima facility was registering one million times above normal trace radiation levels. As of this writing, that same area is now said to have radiation levels ten thousand times above safe limits. The sea water around the Fukishima reactors has become highly contaminated with levels now over 1000 times normal.

More frightening than the current situation is the possibility that radiation from one or more nuclear reactors in Japan has been leaking into the world's natural environment for over a year. Several scientists have pointed out that the reactors have not been properly inspected for over ten years. They also say that previous earthquakes and tremors in Japan may have caused damage that was not detected and might explain the enigmatic deaths of fish and birds throughout the world during the last several years.

On March 9, 2011 over one million dead sardines clogged a marina in Redondo Beach, California. The cause of death remains unknown, but many were said to have had high levels of radiation in them. So much so that many could not be used for fertilizer as originally planned. Several fishing vessels within a thousand miles of Japan have reported pulling up nets full of dead fish within weeks of the earthquake. These fish also showed higher then normal levels of radiation when tested.

Tens of thousands of dead fish washed up on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland during the early months of 2011. Since December of 2010, 100 tons of fish have washed ashore near Paran?, Paranagu?, and other coastal towns in Brazil. New Zealand reported that hundreds of dead snapper fish washed onto the beaches of Coromandel on the North Island. Not all of these odd occurrences may be related to some unknown or unreported release of radioactive materials, but I cannot recall a time when so many unexplained events of this type have happened so often throughout the world.

In early January over five thousand blackbirds and starlings fell out of the sky and were already dead when they hit the ground in Arkansas. Five hundred birds fell dead out of the sky in Louisiana less than a month later. In all, the U.S. Geological Survey has reported that at least ninety mass deaths of birds and other wildlife occurred between June and December of 2010. None have been explained to the satisfaction of scientists and most wildlife preservation societies; a few have involved over one thousand birds inexplicably dropping out of the sky dead.

It's upsetting to watch news and weather professionals basically lie to people about the potential danger to the United States and other nations posed by the Japanese nuclear disaster. They keep saying that any radiation carried to other areas by seawater currents will be completely dispersed, but is that really true? If loads of dead fish are being pulled up in nets by fishing boats within one thousand miles of Japan and reports now indicate that one or more reactors may have been leaking for a over a year or more, can we not assume that at least some of the damage is already done?

As of this writing, on March 27, 2011, Japanese officials report that several pools of radioactive water now exist in containment and/or nuclear reactor buildings that are ten million times above normal. How long can this kind of contamination be contained? That is especially true when you consider the fact that the people trying to solve the problem have admitted that they really do not know how bad the leak is or even if that is the problem in the first place. We must remember that certain types of radiation exposure tend to create damage on humans and animals from the inside out.

Let's take a look at the situation from a scientific, Biblical and prophetic standpoint:

As early as March 12, 2012, newspapers and broadcasters were making statements like "It's not good" about the nuclear disaster in Japan. The reactors in question are forty years old and have not been inspected properly for some ten years. The record-setting Earthquake in Japan may have merely added to a problem or leak that already existed. At least five reactors now have problems or are in danger of a core meltdown.

Just in the past few days, sometime around March 24,2011, three workers from one plant were admitted to the hospital after they were exposed to a pool of contaminated water that may have contained radioactivity that was a million times above the normal levels. The workers were shielded by a large tarp to keep from public from seeing what has happened to them. It's possibly and probably burned by exposure to radiation. It appears that the news media and their carefully chosen expert spokespeople are simply ignoring the reality of radiation science and making things up as they go along, attempting to quell panic among their readers, listeners and viewers.

The worst offenders are the people that claim to speak for the Lord. They stand in their pulpits and remain silent about the threat and the fact that Bible Prophecy is coming true while we watch. God has warned people about ignoring Him and disobeying His Will. For example, the Bible says in Psalm 9:17, "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God." There are many people in many nations that believe that God is merely a concept; that his Word is a book of fairy tales; that his prophecy and judgments are merely made up stories designed to frighten people. But, guess again!

During the past year we have witnessed a number of disasters and odd events that have been predicted in the Word of God. These include numerous and powerful earthquakes, devastating floods, pestilences, strange and unidentified objects seen in the skies all over the world, wars, conflicts, rebellions, the shrinking and then enlargement of the moon, famines and much more.

ON THE EARTH: According to the U.S. Geological Society, there have been over 50 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from three all the way to the 9.0-9.4 (depending on which expert you listen to) earthquake in Japan from January of 2010 to March of 2011. Record cold weather has destroyed or delayed crops in many U.S. States. A new type of citrus pest is killing orange trees and citrus cops in the southeast and also threatens the southwest. Hoards of up to a million wild boars are roaming the Southern and a few Midwestern U.S. States. They destroy crops, damage property and are difficult to kill.

IN THE SKIES: Last year scientists told us that the Moon was shrinking; now they say it's growing larger. A huge object appeared over North and South American and moved slowly across the sky. It was photographed and filmed by thousands of people. Scientists were unable to identify this object which did not appear to be a meteor or easily recognizable astronomical object. It did not break apart and may have crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

The following Bible verses give us a preview of things to come as God's Judgment plays out on the Earth:

Matthew 24:3-8: "And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows."

Luke 21:5-11: And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven."

Isaiah 34:4: "And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree."

Ezekiel 22: 25-31: There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.

Zechariah 14:12: "And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth."

It's important for people to understand that the world will probably not end tomorrow, but the events that are unfolding worldwide are certainly a sign that we are witnessing the beginning of the end. God's patience is running out and it's time for people to examine their lives and their relationship with the Creator of our world! Do not be fooled by the happy talk of news media pundits and preachers sold out to the idea that having people support their lavish lifestyles is more important than telling the truth as it's revealed in God's Word.

Is the United States in Danger of Japan’s Nuclear Fallout?

Is the United States in Danger of Japan’s Nuclear Fallout?

With four of Japan’s nuclear reactors in different stages of “Meltdown”, concerns are increasing over the possibility of the nuclear material from one of these reactors reaching the United States.

A normal part of the west to east flow of air across the earth, moves anything in the atmosphere, across the Pacific ocean and to the United States.

Any nuclear material making it’s way into the 30,000 foot range of the upper atmosphere is a candidate to be swept across the Pacific ocean in just four days.

Once the fuel rods that contain radioactive Plutonium and Uranium begin to melt within the inner six inch thick stainless steel vessel, tremendous amounts of nuclear material are released into the air surrounding the nuclear plant.

Current air currents indicate that any air over Japan will come to the United States within days. It is for certain that nuclear monitoring stations on the west coast of the United States will be closely monitoring the atmosphere for any nuclear particles.

Nuclear Material from Japan to the United States

Some the worlds best nuclear experts have visited the Fukushima Nuclear Plant in Japan and have concerns that a total meltdown of at least two of the reactors is immanent. Their concerns are that if enough nuclear material makes it’s way into the upper atmosphere, it could be carried across the entire United States and pose a serious risk.

When the first explosion occurred at Reactor 1 at Fukushima, concerns were low that any danger was posed by the release of small amounts of nuclear material. Since this initial explosion, subsequent detonations of Hydrogen gas at other reactors at Fukushima have increased dramatically nuclear contamination concerns.

Fukushima Nuclear Reactor Diagram of Meltdown

Following the initial blast and release of small amounts of nuclear material at reactor one, a second explosion occurred on March 14th. The coolant levels in two of the reactors have repeatedly exposed the fuel rods, causing massive increases of heat that have already melted some of the fuel rods in the inner containment vessel.

The current level of radiation being released from the plant are not a danger to anyone in the United States. However, as the amounts of nuclear material begins to increase, which is by every indication will happen, the danger to U.S. citizens is real and serious.

For political reason, many of the U.S. and Japanese government officials are downplaying the seriousness of the nuclear accident, leaving most people unaware of just how catastrophic the recent core meltdown and release of nuclear material is.

Weather experts say that the current radiation that has been released from Fukushima will reach the West Coast of California Tomorrow.

Reports are coming in that Americans who have been in Japan and are arriving at airports in Dallas and Chicago’s O’Hare airport’s, are setting of radiation detectors.

Should radioactive particles reach America and be taken into the body of a person, the cells of that person would undergo an immediate attack within the body. Either by breathing minute radioactive particles, eating food contaminated, or drinking water containing radioactive particles, the process of the breakdown of every cell in the body begins.

The Biblical application of these events seems obvious at this point. One of the plagues described in the Book of Revelation chapter 6 is described as “Beasts of the Earth”.

Revelation 6:8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.

The Greek word for “Beasts” is “Therion“, meaning a dangerous animal or venomous creature. The meaning of this Greek word from which “Beasts” was translated, can mean a tiny particle, even microscopic “Beast”.

As the first seal is opened in Revelation chapter 6, we see the beginning of the seven year tribulation.

Revelation 6:1 Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.”

Revelation 6:2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

This is the introduction of the antichrist to the world by a the making of a seven year peace treaty between the nations that surround Israel and the nation of Israel herself. The Book of Daniel chapter 9 describes the fact that 3 1/2 years into this peace treaty, the new world leader will enter the newly built temple in Israel and announce to the world that he is God and that all the world should worship him.

As a result of this proclamation, the remaining 6 seals are opened by Jesus on the earth the releases His wrath:

Revelation 6:3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.”

Revelation 6:4 Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

As the second seal is opened by Jesus, war begins on the earth:

Revelation 6:5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.

The results of global war: Massive decreases in the food supply, famine ensues over the planet.

Revelation 6:6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”

A quart of wheat was the daily supply of grain necessary to sustain one man for one day. Here during the beginning of this global war at middle of the seven year Tribulation, it will cost an entire day’s wage to purchase enough food for one person.

Revelation 6:7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.”

Revelation 6:8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.

As as result of global war and the resulting famine, death now reigns all over the earth. Millions are dying from the implements of the war (Sword), hunger, and… “The Beasts of the Earth”.

There is every indication that during the last 3 1/2 years of the Great Tribulation, that small “Beasts will be the cause of Millions of death all over the world.

Is it possible that the release of Nuclear Material in Japan and the potential deaths from Radiation poisoning across the planet, could be a precursor of the events described in the Book of Revelation.

3 Good Reads for Thursday: Japan’s Debt, a Ponzi Scheme, and Debtor’s Prison

Story #1: Good point from the Pragmatic Capitalist …

Some pundits say Japan is on the brink of a bond market collapse that will result in the inability of the government to finance its debt which leads to a Greek scenario. Of course, what these people fail to recognize is that Japan is fundamentally different from Greece in that Greece is a currency user and Japan is a currency issuer.

Story #2: Another Ponzi schemer arrested. Funny how they arrest these bottom feeders, but never get around to putting the steel cufflinks on the high-and-mighty bankers who swindled America for hundreds of billions of dollars.

According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which brought the civil charges, Durham and former chairman James F. Cochran pocketed money from investors—many of them elderly—or diverted it to “struggling and unprofitable” companies under their control. They also allegedly took investor funds to “enhance their own lavish lifestyles,” including buying classic cars.

Story #3: Debtor’s Prison: More than a third of all U.S. states allow borrowers who can’t or won’t pay to be jailed.

Judges have signed off on more than 5,000 such warrants since the start of 2010 in nine counties with a total population of 13.6 million people, according to a tally by The Wall Street Journal of filings in those counties. Nationwide figures aren’t known because many courts don’t keep track of warrants by alleged offense. In interviews, 20 judges across the nation said the number of borrowers threatened with arrest in their courtrooms has surged since the financial crisis began.

A First Person Account From Japan's Ground Zero

Jason Kelly, a financial writer living in Sano, Japan, shares his first person experience of the stunning events from the past several days.

The ground here in Sano, Japan is still shaking as I write at noon on Saturday, March 12, 2011, the day after the largest earthquake in the nation’s history. It struck 21.5 hours ago.

I was working at my desk as usual when my shoji — sliding doors of translucent veneer in the case of my office, though covered in white paper in most cases — began rattling on their rails. They’re the best early warning system I’ve found, so I knew an earthquake was arriving but had no idea how big it would be.

The early tremors that shook my shoji were nothing. The roar of the earth that followed is what really tipped me off that this was no ordinary wineglass rattler. Imagine a wind you might have heard high on a mountain sweeping down toward you. That’s scary enough. Now imagine that wind not being made of air overhead, but of earth underfoot, barreling up at you.

I shot from my chair to secure the office. I covered the computer, put my expensive vase on the floor, unplugged equipment, and was just heading for the kitchen when the quake slammed the building. The neighborhood surfed on dirt. The lights swung from the ceiling, then blinked out. For a second I thought they were smart earthquake lights that sensed the tremors and turned themselves off to avoid sparking a fire, but then I noticed that all the power was out.

From inside every cabinet came a delightful tinkling of glass as if a small party had broken out to toast the arrival of spring, then the party turned horrible in a fight between stemware and cookware in the kitchen, books and printer paper in the office, with a great attempt on all fronts to pour forth in a tidal wave of debris across the floor. The quake-resistant, spring-secured kitchen and office cabinet doors held fast, though, and no tidal wave appeared — at least not in my building. Farther north, a tidal wave of the real variety gathered strength to devastate the coastline with such fury that Hollywood special effects departments are going to need to rethink the way they’ve depicted such events. They’re even worse than portrayed.

Once the initial slam subsided, people rushed into the streets. The elderly, who are legion in Japan and prepared for anything, arrived in white hard hats. One of them asked me if that wasn’t an incredible quake, and I tried to lighten the mood by pretending I hadn’t noticed.

“Quake?” I replied. “Nothing happened here,” I said, gesturing to my place.

She looked confused, then turned toward her home. “This house has always given me trouble,” she began, and started to describe how it had shaken the dickens out of her. I felt bad and cut in.

“I was just joking,” I told her. “I felt it, too.” I thought for sure she would have known I was kidding. Pretending not to notice that quake was like pretending not to notice daylight. She looked at me without smiling, then said sternly, “This is no time for telling lies, Mr. Kelly.”

That’s what the Japanese call jokes like the one I’d just attempted, lies, and she was right. It was no time for that. I got caught up in the thrill of danger and my sense of humor is what I use to deal with such moments, but I cast it aside in a hurry and joined in conversations about who needed what, when the next wave of the quake crashed upon us. Then the next. Then the next.

So it went. Wave after wave coursed through the land, sending power lines swinging and roofs crashing and the ocean surging. The trains stopped. The emergency announcement system blared that the power had gone out due to the quake.

As darkness descended and still the power stayed out, people lit candles in their homes. I moved around the city to see how it coped with the situation, even as the tremors continued. Traffic lights didn’t work, so cars edged their way cautiously into big intersections until the police showed up later to direct. Islands of light betrayed where emergency power had kicked in: the hospital standing tall and staying busy, a home for the elderly that was a type of hospital itself, vending machines that apparently contain batteries to keep selling drinks through any crisis.

A few convenience stores had power, but quickly no food except the dried, instant variety, and then even that was gone. People bought magazines, which I thought odd until I saw by the looks on their faces that what they sought was a part of normal life that had seemed so banal half a day earlier. In a snap, anything that symbolized that placid pace through a typical day became valuable, so off the shelves it flew.

Darkness fell, really fell when no man-made glows pushed against it in a million domes of modernity. The stars came out. I noticed them with joy because they were much brighter in the purer darkness. They made me think of soldier stories where men noticed something beautiful in nature as they fought, like a flower on the edge of a foxhole or a red-winged bird singing on a branch shot through with holes. I observed the world through no such dire circumstance, but the post-quake landscape gave me enough of a nudge in that direction to better understand my fellow man under duress.

I climbed a hill at the edge of town to look down on the sea of darkness. It was creepy. Where usually an endless field of lights extends to Tokyo, only a few areas of light appeared. Directly below the hill, eerie pools of headlights moved slowly around, many looking for missing family members who were unable to take the trains home. There were no city lights around the cars, just the headlight pools drifting along invisible grids like ghosts shaken from their graves.

With most people early in bed, the shaking continued. Isolated reports from community leaders holding radios on the streets informed me on the way home that northern Japan lay in ruin. The voices came leaden, delivering facts so directly that their effort to suppress emotion was in a way more emotional than if they’d cried out their sadness at each collapsed school or deluged farmhouse.

The chain of facts overwhelmed me. There was no break, no “In other news” transition to a different grim event, much less a weekend human interest sideshow. One statistic after another emanated from the radios in a legato of misfortune.

Eventually I reached a saturation point. There’s a limit to how much disaster I’m capable of processing. The adjectives peter out somewhere beyond tragic and catastrophic and devastating, and then those once horrible emotionless facts become welcome as a way to make sense of the event and form a plan for moving ahead. Let’s reduce that number of missing people. Let’s get the lights back on. Let’s make toilets flush again. How about some real food on shelves? The disaster list turns into a checklist. That’s the human spirit, alright. Let’s crawl up out of this hole!

Through the night we huddled in our capsules atop the rumbling island. When the first photon of sunlight touched the Land of the Rising Sun, we became the land of the rising determined and got straight to work on our checklists. One day, they’ll be complete and life will become a boring string of daily predictability again, within which some kid is bound to complain, “Nothing interesting ever happens to me.”

To be so lucky, young one.

LARGE SCALE COVER UP of Japan's Multiple Nuclear Meltdowns is Now Underway!!!

...that’s the scale of the crisis facing Japan as officials admit for the first time that three nuclear reactors are already in a meltdown.

All the nuclear reactors at the earthquake stricken Fukushima nuclear plant are under threat of  melting down and exploding in a chain reaction that will signify the world’s worst ever nuclear disaster and send clouds of radioactive particles hurtling towards the United States – that’s the scale of the crisis facing Japan as officials admit for the first time that three nuclear reactors are already in a meltdown.

While the mainstream media continues to argue over the definition of a “meltdown” while unquestionably regurgitating the dubious claim of Japanese officials that the two massive explosions witnessed at the plant were caused by pressurized hydrogen, radioactive isotopes cesium-137 and iodine-121 have been detected by helicopters flying 160km (100 miles) away from the nuclear plant, which can only mean one thing, according to the Seattle Times: “One or more of the reactor cores is badly damaged and at least partially melted down.”

After claiming for three days that the explosions did not damage reactor cores and downplaying the severity of the situation, Japanese officials have now been forced to admit the obvious, that nuclear fuel rods in three reactors are melting.

Given the sequence of events, it is entirely probable that all six reactor sites will now go into total meltdown and start spewing radioactive particles into the atmosphere that threaten not only Japanese citizens but also those living on the west coast of the United States.

The two explosions have already compromised the surrounding facilities. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from a 20-km exclusion zone around the plant which keeps growing. Latest reports suggest that the exclusion zone is already at 50km and expanding. Casualties in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear facilities are likely to be far higher than reported.

Japanese authorities, presumably in an effort to prevent hysteria, have engaged in a cover-up of the true scale of the Fukushima crisis from start to finish, and they have been largely aided by a mass media that has slavishly repeated their lies without question, despite the fact that there is a long history of covering up nuclear catastrophes in Japan. This process has only put the Japanese people in more danger.

Amidst the disgusting spectacle of a castrated and inept corporate mass media failing to ask hard questions about the true scale of the Fukushima crisis, a handful of nuclear experts are attempting to blow the whistle.

As reported by the BBC:

Japanese engineer Masashi Goto, who helped design the containment vessel for Fukushima’s reactor core, says the design was not enough to withstand earthquakes or tsunamis and the plant’s builders, Toshiba, knew this.

Mr Goto says his greatest fear is that blasts at number 3 and number 1 reactors may have damaged the steel casing of the containment vessel designed to stop radioactive material escaping into the atmosphere.

He says that as the reactor uses mox (mixed oxide) fuel, the melting point is lower than that of conventional fuel. Should a meltdown and an explosion occur, he says, plutonium could be spread over an area up to twice as far as estimated for a conventional nuclear fuel explosion. The next 24 hours are critical, he says.

Goto warns that Japanese authorities have suppressed the true severity of the crisis and that there is “a severe risk of an explosion, with radioactive material being strewn over a very wide area – beyond the 20km evacuation zone set up by the authorities,” adding that the worst case scenario would manifest itself as “many Chernobyls,” and that the effect would be, “Like a volcano spreading radioactive material.”

Nuclear expert Joe Cirincione warns that radiation from Japan’s multiple potential nuclear meltdowns could spread to the US west coast and that the threat represents an “unprecedented crisis.”

Yoichi Shimatsu, former editor of the Japan Times,  states that after a high-level government meeting, “Japanese agencies are no longer releasing independent reports without prior approval from the top,” and that censorship of what is really occurring at the plant is being overseen under the Article 15 Emergency Law.

Professor Richard Wakeford, a nuclear expert at Manchester University, said yesterday: ‘If the fuel is not covered by cooling water it could become so hot it begins to melt – if all the fuel is uncovered you could get a large-scale meltdown.’

Today it looks as if that scenario is playing out.

Shaun Burnie, an independent atomic energy consultant, also warns that Japan’s nuclear crisis is much worse than it seems:

The US has moved one of its aircraft carriers from the area after detecting low-level radiation 160km (100 miles) offshore.

The Japanese government is playing down the scale of the disaster, however, experts have pointed out that it has a long history of nuclear cover ups, and that this is merely  the latest.

Documentary filmmaker Tony Barrell says in 2003 reactors across the country had to be shut down after it emerged the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) had hid accidents.

“They had to shut down 17 plants in 2003 because they’d been falsifying the records about what had been happening at them,” he said.

“Lives were threatened, systems broke down, there were failures to report and there were cover-ups. People pretended things hadn’t happened.”

Barrell says several other major incidents have occurred and gone relatively unreported:

“A place called Monju, which in 1995 sprang a leak in its liquid sodium cooling system which made the whole thing absolutely red hot and had to be shut down immediately and stayed shut down until the beginning of last year – 15 years,” he told ABC News in Australia.

Barrell also pointed out that the Fukushima Daiichi plant should have been shut down long ago because it is now 40 years old.

Should other plants in Japan experience complete meltdowns, the entire country could become a nuclear wasteground, and the radiation could engulf large areas of the planet, leading to huge numbers of cancers and future birth deformities.

Investors on Alert: Japan’s Nikkei Index Crashes 1000 Points In Less than a Week

Japan’s Nikkei Index, which measures the top 225 companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, went into an almost immediate freefall after Tsunami waves began washing up on the country’s northeast coast. The Nikkei 255 Index, which reached a high of 10,600 point on Wednesday, had tumbled to 10,250 points by Friday’s close. The earthquake off the coast of Japan hit at approximately 2:00 PM Japanese time on Friday, March 11.

By close of business Monday, as Japanese officials struggled to maintain order amid a potential nuclear meltdown at multiple reactors, stocks had dropped an additional 650 points, wiping out over 6% of the index’s market capitalization. The country’s central bank, the Bank of Japan, has responded to the disaster by injecting some 15 Trillion Yen ($183 Billion) into the financial system in an attempt to stabilize markets and stem panic.

Other stock markets around the world fared better than Japan as events on the ground, recovery efforts, and the Tsunami’s impact on the Japanese economy remain in question.  Japan is the world’s third largest economy after the European Union and The United States.

With northern Japan in ruin, tens of thousands still missing, and millions without power, Japan will most certainly see negative economic growth in the short-term. If the nuclear reactors, which some Japanese officials say are under control, were to go into complete meltdown and send radiation into surrounding areas and across the Pacific, the economic effects on Japan, Asia and the rest of the world would be felt within days, with stock markets providing a forewarning as panicked investors sell off assets, especially in consumer-related industries like manufacturing, transportation, and retail.

Most stock markets outside of Japan kept losses on Monday to under 2%, however, the legitimacy of the official news reports coming out of Japan are in question, especially with respect to the nuclear power plants. Mixed information has only added to the confusion, with some officials reporting that everything is under control, while others indicate that fuel rods are completely exposed and have melted down, or are in the process of melting down. Radiation exposure has been measured in residents on the ground, as well as on a US Naval vessel traveling through a radiation cloud, and US emergency response helicopters on which 17 members of the US Navy were treated for radiation contamination.

News reports continue to be mixed, leading to uncertainty, but not yet complete panic, in financial markets. Gold and other precious metals, which are considered to be measures of not just inflation, but global crisis sentiment, have seen minor gains on Monday suggesting that global investors have not yet shifted capital into safe haven assets.

With an already failing economic recovery in the US, a black swan variable such as the Japanese quake, Tsunami and nuclear crisis may very well be the tipping point that sends the entire world into a financial and economic catastrophe.

Anatomy of Japan’s Nuclear Plant Meltdown

Anatomy of Japan’s Nuclear Plant Meltdown

In the 1979 movie “The China Syndrome” a nuclear reactor experiences a meltdown of it’s core.

In this hypothetical scenario, nuclear material located within a containment building reaches a temperature beyond a manageable capacity. As the temperatures increase, the reactor melts and burns through the foundation of the power plant and into the crust of the earth.

The idea behind the term “China Syndrome” is that once the nuclear material generates heat beyond 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, it could continue to burn itself all the way through the earth, to the other side of the planet, stopping at China.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan has 6 “Boiling Water” reactors that were completed in the late 70's. In fact, the plant that has reached a critical place of possible meltdown was designed by the United States.

The basic structure of the facility in which the nuclear material is housed, is encased in a core of six-inch thick solid stainless steel containment structure that is pill-shaped. Inside this structure are several hundred fuel rods assemblies. Each Assembly has about one hundred fuel rods constructed of Zirconium Alloy.  These fuel rods have within them, pellets of Uranium that have been enriched from three to five percent of the energy producing U-235 Isotope.

The following description and illustrations depict what happened so far at Fukushima, and what we may expect to happen in the future:

The Fukushima Nuclear power plant in Japan uses a facility called a “Boiling Water Reactor”. (1) Two thirds of the reactor is filled with water. (2) Below the water is a section of Nuclear fuel rods made from Uranium. (3) As the Uranium fuel rods generate heat, water begins to boil and produces steam that is piped into a turbine that is spun. (4) Electricity is generated.

Anatomy of a Nuclear Meltdown

In the case of the Fukushima plant, when the earthquake occurred, ironically electrical power to the plant was disrupted. Even the generator backups failed to operate. (1)  Water flow to the reactor is cutoff. As more water is heated and turned into steam, there is less water in the reactor. When this happens: (2) The water level begins to drop until the nuclear fuel rods are exposed.

Anatomy of a Nuclear Meltdown 2

As the water level continues to drop, the temperature within the reactor goes from a normal temperature of about 2,000 degrees to 4,000 degrees. At this temperature the fuel rod’s protective coating is destroyed and the rods react with the uranium or plutonium fuel. Nuclear meltdown is imminent.

Anatomy of a Nuclear Meltdown 3

The first possible scenario (1) is that the massive heat inside the core of the reactor will burn through the bottom of the reactor and sink into the crust of the earth. As the core comes in contact with the water reservoirs beneath the plant, it will release radioactive material. The second scenario (2) is that the reactor vessel will reach such a great pressure that it will explode through the 6-inch solid stainless steel containment casing, causing massive amounts of Radioactive material to escape into the atmosphere.

Anatomy of a Nuclear Meltdown 4

As you can see, the crisis began because of a decrease in the water supplied to the plant. This was due to the electricity being cut off by the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake. Even the Generator backup system failed. Ironically, the power plant that produces electricity, cannot itself survive unless electricity is supplied to it.

As soon as the earthquake occurred, the Fukushima reactors went into automatic shutdown. When shutdown begins, specially constructed neutron absorbing fuel rods called “Control Rods” are inserted in between the uranium fuel rod assemblies, stopping the nuclear reaction that causes heat.

The problem with the Fukushima plant is that although the nuclear reaction was halted, the nuclear fuel that was already burning, creates completely new products that themselves generate a tremendous amount of heat by radioactive decay. There is no way to stop this heat from being generated except by the introduction of cool sea water.

When the sea water cannot reach the nuclear containment structure, the ensuing scenario of Fukushima takes place.

Seeking to release some of the pressure within the containment structure, the plant operators released into the atmosphere, the Hydrogen gas that had been built up inside. The cause of this buildup of pressure is the Zirconium alloy in the fuel rod assemblies. The Zirconium that lines the fuel rod assemblies, has most likely melted due to the massive increase in temperature inside the plant. When Zirconium reaches about 4,000 degrees and comes in contact with water, it created Hydrogen gas that is highly combustible.

The explosion and complete destruction of the concrete retainment building at Fukushima was due to the buildup of this highly volatile Hydrogen gas being ignited.

At this point we know that the Zirconium lined fuel cells have melted. The Uranium and Plutonium pellets inside the fuel cells have fallen out into the floor of the pressure vessel. The next stage is a complete meltdown of the core

If enough of these Uranium and Plutonium pellets are released inside the reactor, the plant will reach “Critical Mass” and begin producing uncontrolled heat that would lead to Nuclear Meltdown.

At this moment, the plant operators are filling the structure with Boronic Acid that has the effect of neutralizing the neutrons produced by the Uranium and Plutonium pellets. This could slow the nuclear reaction of the facility and reduce the temperature. Many experts do not believe that this is possible now, considering the advanced stage of the nuclear process.

One of the techniques that is being deployed in the two reactors at the Fukushima Nuclear station is to pump cool sea water into the reactor core. The normal coolant used to maintain the proper temperature inside the reactor is not salt water. The implementation of sea water means that the owners of the plant have basically decided that the plant is beyond commercial redemption. Once sea water is pumped into the reactor, it virtually renders the nuclear core useless to ever again produce power. The good news is that the immediate use of cool sea water seems to have saved the nuclear core from completing the meltdown process.

If the pumping of sea water into the reactor does not succeed, there is no way to turn off the process that has already begun at the plant. If the heat continues to build up, it will be impossible to stop the tragic effects. Unless the material from inside the plant can be removed, there is no hope of stopping the current process and prevent an unimaginable Nuclear accident.

Flashback: Gordon Blessed Japan’s Earth and Sea

As we reported back at the time, when Jonah Brown last went to Japan he attended an 8-course dinner with the theme “Blessings of the Earth and Sea”. It goes without saying that on the same visit he agreed a nuclear fuel re-processing deal for Sellafield (which he also cursed). Japan’s Earthquake and Coronal Mass Ejection Related?

No scientific proof exists (yet) to connect the Coronal Mass Ejection solar storm that hit our planet on the 10th, hours before the massive 8.9 earthquake with consequent tsunami in Japan, could be related and an explanation for the violent behaviour of our planet. Spaceweather.com reported that on March 10 “A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth’s magnetic field on March 10th. The impact set off a G1-class geomagnetic storm and sent Northern Lights rippling over the US-Canadian border into states such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. Sky watchers who hadn’t seen auroras in years captured beautiful photos of green and purple streamers. This is another sign that Solar Cycle 24 is heating up.”

Besides the ‘beautiful’ effects of the auroras, what else could have provoked this event. The disaster in Japan seems to be coincidently close to the violent magnetic activity that struck our planet with the Coronal Mass Ejection on Thursday night. Speculation doesn’t do much good I know, but are scientists genuinely researching the possibility at least?? One must wonder…especially since this is in line with the predictions for a Mega Tsunami in 2012! Read more about these predictions in The World Cataclysm in 2012.

More than ever people are seeing the need for preparation and are massively ordering the Survival Reference Guide, a comprehensive and exhaustive guide we all must have handy with the catastrophes piling up as they do now!

Japan’s strongest quake in 140 years could have been predicted

Written by Canadafirst on 11 March 2011

The strongest in 140 years earthquake near the north-east coast of Japan created the threat of giant tsunami waves across the entire Pacific area. In Japan, the disaster has already caused a 10-meter high wave that crashed onto the shore destroying everything on its path. Millions of houses have been left without electricity, including in the country’s capital, Tokyo.

The number of casualties is still unknown, although it is clear that the death toll is growing. Many of the victims have most likely been buried underneath the rubble.

International experts say that the giant waves may flood several small Pacific islands entirely. Many others, including the chain of Hawaii islands, are facing the threat of serious destruction.

The tsunami threat will stay on for hours. Japanese specialists say that today’s 8.9 magnitude earthquake is the strongest since 1872, when the country started to register quakes officially. The Great Earthquake of September 1, 1923 was measured 7.9 on Richter scale: over 140,000 people died in Tokyo and suburbs.

The epicenter of today’s earthquake was located 373 kilometers to the north-east from Tokyo, at the depth of 24 kilometers. Several other less powerful quakes (magnitude 6.0) took place in the area afterwards. The epicenter of one of them was located 67 kilometers far from Tokyo. Not less than 14 large industrial objects are currently ablaze in the area.

Russian scientist Yevgeny Rogozhin, deputy director of the Institute for Earth’s Physics, said that the Japanese quake could have been predicted. A weaker earthquake took place in the area a week ago, he said.

“There was another earthquake several days ago. I think that it was a foreshock. It occurred further north of the current quake, near Honshu island as well. It seems that it was the location of the edge of the seismic center of the quake, which took place today,” the scientist said.
