Should Residents Of Tokyo Be Preparing For Massive Radiation Exposure? 12 Disturbing Facts To Consider

Does anyone really know what is going on at the Fukushima nuclear complex?  When problems at the facility first surfaced, authorities promised that no significant amounts of radiation would be released.  Then we were told that only those living within 20 kilometers of the complex needed to take precautions.  After that we were told that radiation was showing up in many different types of vegetables all over northern and central Japan but that it was not a major concern.  Now we are being told that the tap water in Tokyo is unsafe for infants to drink.  So what are they going to tell us next?  Should residents of Tokyo be preparing for massive radiation exposure from this disaster?  Tokyo is only 150 miles away from the Fukushima nuclear complex.  If a worst case scenario plays out at Fukushima, exactly what would that mean for the over 30 million people that live in and around Tokyo?

Sadly, so far the authorities in Japan have not been very transparent about this crisis.  But what should we expect?  Internationally, standard operating procedure during a nuclear crisis is to keep the public from becoming too alarmed.  The real scope of the danger is always downplayed in order to avoid a panic.  We saw this at Chernobyl and we are seeing this now.

Not only that, but in a world where legal liability plays such a key role, there is a huge incentive for TEPCO executives not to admit everything that they know.  Admitting something now could potentially cost them massive amounts of money later.

Right now airborne radiation in Tokyo is four times the normal level, but Japanese authorities do not seem too concerned yet.  They still insist that everything is going to be okay.

But things at Fukushima seem to be taking a turn for the worse again.  Today, thick black smoke was belching from Unit 3.  Unit 3 is considered the most dangerous of the reactors because it contains plutonium.  If a large scale release of plutonium were to take place that would be absolutely catastrophic.

But plutonium is far from the only significant danger.  For example, cesium isotopes have a half-life of about 30 years.  All of the cesium that is currently being released at Fukushima will be highly radioactive for decades.

So how much cesium is being released at Fukushima?  Well, nobody knows for sure, but Keith Harmon Snow is estimating that each spent fuel pool at the Fukushima nuclear complex could have 24,000 times the amount of cesium that was produced by the nuclear bomb that the U.S. dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War 2.

Yes, this is a very, very serious crisis.

But up to this point many in the mainstream media have been doing their best to play down the potential dangers.

In fact, some prominent scientists have really done a disservice to the public by putting out blatant falsehoods.

For example, in a disgraceful article published just a few days after the tsunami, Dr. Josef Oehmen of MIT promised that there would not be "any significant release of radioactivity" from the damaged Fukushima nuclear complex....

I repeat, there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors.

By "significant" I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on - say - a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

You know, a lot of people actually believed Dr. Josef Oehmen when they read this nonsense.  We are supposed to be able to depend on our top scientists to tell us the truth.

Sadly, these days it is hard to know who you can depend on for the truth.  The following are 12 facts about the crisis in Fukushima that should have all of us deeply concerned....

#1 The Kyodo News Agency is reporting that radiation levels around the Fukushima nuclear facility are now up to 1,600 times the normal level.

#2 According to The Daily Mail, 5 of the now famous "Fukushima 50" are believed to have already died.

#3 Tokyo government officials have announced that radiation levels in Tokyo tap water are now so high that it is unsafe for infants to drink.  In fact, CNN says that tests show that the amount of radioactive iodine in the water is twice what is considered safe for infants....

Government samples taken Tuesday night found 210 becquerels of radioactive iodine per kilogram of water -- two times higher than the limit that the government considers safe for infants.

#4 Elevated levels of radiation have been found in 11 different types of vegetables grown in the vicinity of the Fukushima nuclear complex.

#5 The government of Fukushima Prefecture is instructing residents that they should not eat any leafy vegetables that have been grown in the prefecture recently.

#6 Government officials have ordered all dairy farms within 18 miles of the Fukushima nuclear complex to suspend all shipments.

#7 Over 100 km south of Fukushima, Spinach containing radioactive iodine 27 times the legal limit has been discovered.  The level of cesium found in the same spinach was 4 times the legal limit.

#8 25 miles from the Fukushima complex, one batch of a leafy green vegetable known as kukitachin was recently discovered to contain 11 times the legal limit of radioactive iodine and 82 times the legal limit of cesium.

#9 The U.S. government has now put in place import alerts on milk products and fresh produce from any of the prefectures surrounding the Fukushima nuclear complex.

#10 25 foreign embassies have already either shut down or moved temporarily out of Tokyo.

#11 Radiation levels in one city north of Tokyo, Utsunomiya, were recently reported to be 33 times above normal levels.

#12 It is also being reported that there were over 600,000 spent fuel rods stored at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex.  Each one of those 600,000 spent fuel rods is a potential "dirty bomb".

Some of the best information that I have found on what is really going on at Fukushima comes from an interview recently posted on Counterpunch with nuclear energy expert Hirose Takashi.  He says that spraying water on the reactor buildings in Fukushima is like "sprinkling water on a desert", and he says that if a worst case scenario does play out a deadly cloud of radiation could cover all of Japan in a matter of days....

As you know, of the six reactors at Daiichi, four are in a crisis state.  So even if at one everything goes well and water circulation is restored, the other three could still go down.  Four are in crisis, and for all four to be 100 percent repaired, I hate to say it, but I am pessimistic.  If so, then to save the people, we have to think about some way to reduce the radiation leakage to the lowest level possible.  Not by spraying water from hoses, like sprinkling water on a desert.  We have to think of all six going down, and the possibility of that happening is not low.  Everyone knows how long it takes a typhoon to pass over Japan; it generally takes about a week.  That is, with a wind speed of two meters per second, it could take about five days for all of Japan to be covered with radiation.  We’re not talking about distances of 20 kilometers or 30 kilometers or 100 kilometers.  It means of course Tokyo, Osaka.  That’s how fast a radioactive cloud could spread.

In addition, Takashi says that the media is not telling us the truth about the true danger that radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear complex poses....

Around Fukushima Daiichi Station they measured 400 millisieverts – that’s per hour.  With this measurement (Chief Cabinet Secretary) Edano admitted for the first time that there was a danger to health, but he didn’t explain what this means.  All of the information media are at fault here I think.  They are saying stupid things like, why, we are exposed to radiation all the time in our daily life, we get radiation from outer space.  But that’s one millisievert per year.  A year has 365 days, a day has 24 hours; multiply 365 by 24, you get 8760.  Multiply the 400 millisieverts by that, you get 3,500,000 the normal dose.  You call that safe?  And what media have reported this?  None.  They compare it to a CT scan, which is over in an instant; that has nothing to do with it.  The reason radioactivity can be measured is that radioactive material is escaping.  What is dangerous is when that material enters your body and irradiates it from inside.  These industry-mouthpiece scholars come on TV and what to they say?  They say as you move away the radiation is reduced in inverse ratio to the square of the distance.  I want to say the reverse.  Internal irradiation happens when radioactive material is ingested into the body.  What happens?  Say there is a nuclear particle one meter away from you. You breathe it in, it sticks inside your body; the distance between you and it is now at the micron level. One meter is 1000 millimeters, one micron is one thousandth of a millimeter.  That’s a thousand times a thousand: a thousand squared.  That’s the real meaning of “inverse ratio of the square of the distance.”  Radiation exposure is increased by a factor of a trillion.  Inhaling even the tiniest particle, that’s the danger.

Are you alarmed by what Takashi is saying there?

I know that I was alarmed when I first read it.

The truth is that radioactive material is nothing to mess around with.

Hopefully the authorities in Japan can get this situation under control, because no rational person wants to see a worst case scenario play out.

Let us pray for Japan and the Japanese people.  What they have been through already is nightmarish beyond all imagination, and the last thing they need right about now is a full-blown nuclear catastrophe.

As Buffett Talks Down Japanese Devastation, His Munich Re Announces Massive Loss, Forecast Miss Due To Earthquake

If one was merely listening to the Octogenarian of Omaha this morning on CNBC, one could easily have left the latest cheerleading attempt by the man who has made both an art and a science of frontrunning the government's rescues of the most incompetent and insolvent organizations in America (and later writing oped's both thanking and criticizing Uncle Sam for doing everything possible to transfer as much taxpayer money into Warren's right pocket just before the hypocrisy medication kicks in) to hypnotize the lemmings into believing all is fine in Japan. If indeed that would be the case, one may therefore be excused for not noting the killer irony of one Munich RE coming out just a few short hours later, saying it expects to not only see $2 billion in losses due the events in Japan, but miss its 2011 profit target by a mile, considering the firm had a $3.4 billion profit target. The kicker, of course, is that Munich Re is owned more than 10% by the same demented individual noted above, who has now gone full retard in his attempts to sucker as many sheep into the slaughter just so he can recover, through secondary and tertiary channels, some of his imminent losses in Japanese insurers and reinsurers. And considering that the Nikkei just reported total earthquake-related losses may be up to ¥25 trillion, or roughly ¥20 trillion more than covered by the Japanese Reinsurance Fund, Buffett better be right...Or if not, he better be petitioning the Japanese government to bend over just like America did 3 years ago, and once again bail out his "genius investor" derriere.

From Property and Casualty:

Due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Munich Re says it will not reach its profit target for 2011 after reporting an expected loss of more $2 billion from the event.

The Munich, Germany-based company says its estimated loss of around €1.5 billion (U.S. $2.1 billion at the current exchange rate) is after retrocession and before tax.

The company’s 2011 profit target had been around €2.4 billion ($3.4 billion).

Munich Re says its initial loss estimate is based solely on modeling. Owing to the extent of the destruction, further possible aftershocks and difficult cleanup operations, it will be many weeks before the losses are assessed and all the claims notifications from Japanese primary insurers have come in, says the company.

And here is why the final "one time" catastrophic loss for Munich Re may mean the company has to say goodbye to its entire projected profitability this year, not to mention further "one time" rescue funding from the likes of the German, US and Japanese governments... or else [insert token End of the World scenario here]:

The government estimates direct damage from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami at 15-25 trillion yen, significantly more than the roughly 10 trillion yen for the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995.

Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Kaoru Yosano is expected to present the projection to relevant ministers on Wednesday in the monthly economic report. The damage estimate, the first to be released by the government, will serve as a basis for compiling supplementary budgets and drawing up reconstruction plans.

A JX Energy petrochemical complex in Chiba Prefecture suffered extensive fire damage.

The estimate covers damage to such infrastructure as roads and ports as well as destruction of homes, factories and other buildings. The figure does not include economic losses resulting from the problems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and rolling blackouts.

A large area, from northeastern Japan to the Tokyo region, suffered major damage from this month's quake and tsunami. Private-sector research institutions have estimated damage from the disaster at 10-20 trillion yen.

Of course, none of this should ever be mentioned by the fawning admirers of the octogenarian at CNBC. After all, considering the vesting schedule of their shares, it very well may have occurred to some that the last thing they want to do is cross the kindly grandfather who just may put up a bid for Comcast when all is said and done, now that the Berkshire empire needs a media outlet from whence to issue its propaganda spin: an event that will result in immediate cash vesting of each and every share, and instant liberation from the clutches of the middle class for such immense reporting talents as Becky Quick et al.

Massive Austerity Budgets are Destroying America

The American Empire is failing. A number of its puppet rulers are being overthrown by popular protests, and the almighty dollar will not even buy one Swiss franc, one Canadian dollar, or one Australian dollar. Despite the sovereign debt problem that threatens EU members Greece, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal, it requires $1.38 dollars to buy one euro, a new currency that was issued at parity with the US dollar. The US dollar’s value is likely to fall further in terms of other currencies, because nothing is being done about the US budget and trade deficits. Obama’s budget, if passed, doesn’t reduce the deficit over the next ten years by enough to cover the projected deficit in the FY 2012 budget.Indeed, the deficits are likely to be substantially larger than forecast.  The military/security complex, about which President Eisenhower warned Americans a half century ago, is more powerful than ever and shows no inclination to halt the wars for US hegemony.  The cost of these wars is enormous.  The US media, being good servants for the government, only reports the out-of-pocket or current cost of the wars, which is only about one-third of the real cost. The current cost leaves out the cost of life-long care for the wounded and maimed, the cost of life-long military pensions of those who fought in the wars, the replacement costs of the destroyed equipment, the opportunity cost of the resources wasted in war, and other costs. The true cost of America’s illegal Iraq invasion, which was based entirely on lies, fabrications and deceptions, is at least $3,000 billion according to economist Joseph Stiglitz and budget expert Linda Bilmes. The same for the Afghan war, which is ongoing.  If the Afghan war lasts as long as the Pentagon says it needs to, the cost will be a multiple of the cost of the Iraq war. There is not enough non-military discretionary spending in the budget to cover the cost of the wars even if every dollar is cut. As long as the $1,200 billion ($1.2 trillion) annual budget for the military/security complex http://www.tomdispatch.com/blog/175361/  is off limits, nothing can be done about the U.S. budget deficit except to renege on obligations to the elderly, confiscate private assets, or print enough money to inflate away all debts. The other great contribution to the US deficit is the offshoring of production for US markets.  This practice has enriched corporate management, large shareholders, and Wall Street, but it has eroded the tax base, and thereby tax collections, of local, state, and federal government, halted the growth of real income for everyone but the rich, and disrupted the lives of those Americans whose jobs were sent abroad.  When short-term and long-term discouraged workers are added to the U.3 measure of unemployment, the U.S. has an unemployment rate of 22%.  A country with more than one-fourth of its work force unemployed has a shrunken tax base and feeble consumer purchasing power. To put it bluntly, the $3 trillion cost of the Iraq war, as computed by Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes, is 20% of the size of the U.S. economy in 2010. In other words, the Iraq war alone cost Americans one-fifth of the year’s gross domestic product.  Instead of investing the resources, which would have produced income and jobs growth and solvency for state and local governments, the US government wasted the equivalent of 20% of the production of the economy in 2010 in blowing up infrastructure and people in foreign lands.  The US government spent a huge sum of money committing war crimes, while millions of Americans were thrown out of their jobs and foreclosed out of their homes. The bought-and-paid-for Congress had no qualms about unlimited funding for war, but used the resulting “debt crisis” to refuse help to American citizens who were out of work and out of their homes. The obvious conclusion is that “our” government does not represent us.The US government remains a champion of offshoring, which it calls “globalism.”  According to the US government and its shills among “free market” economists, destroying American manufacturing and the tax bases of cities, states, and the federal government by moving US jobs and GDP offshore is “good for the economy.” It is “free trade.” It is the same sort of “good” that the US government brings to Iraq and Afghanistan by invading those countries and destroying lives, homes and infrastructures.  Destruction is good.  That’s the way our government and its shills see things. In America destruction is done with jobs offshoring, financial deregulation, and fraudulent financial instruments. In Iraq and Afghanistan (and now Pakistan) is it done with bombs and drones. It is leading to the destruction of Social Security and Medicare.Republicans have convinced a large percentage of voters that America is in trouble, not because it wastes 20% of the annual budget on wars of aggression and Homeland Security porn-scanners, but  because of the poor and retirees.Pundits scapegoat the middle class and blame the struggling middle along with the poor and retirees. Fareed Zakaria, for example, sees no extravagance in a trillion dollar military budget. The real money, he says, is in programs for the middle class, and the middle class “will immediately punish any [politician] who proposes spending cuts in any middle class program.”  What does Zakaria think the military/security complex will do to any politician who cuts the military budget? As a well-paid shill he had rather not say.Andrew Sullivan also has no concept of reductions in military/security subsidies: “they’re big babies I mean, people keep saying they don’t want any tax increases, but they don’t want to have their Medicare cut, they don’t want to have their Medicaid [cut] or they don’t want to have their Social Security touched one inch. Well, it’s about time someone tells them, you can’t have it, baby.” Niall Ferguson thinks that Americans are so addicted to wars that the U.S. government will default on Social Security and Medicare.Republicans tell us that our grandchildren are being saddled with impossible debt burdens because of handouts to retirees and the poor. $3 trillion wars are necessary and have nothing to do with the growth of the public debt. The public debt is due to unnecessary “welfare” that workers paid for with a 15% payroll tax. When you hear a Republican sneer “entitlement,” he or she is referring to Social Security and Medicare, for which people have paid 15% of their wages for their working lifetime.  But when a Republican sneers, he or she is saying “welfare.”  To the distorted mind of a Republican, Social Security and Medicare are undeserved welfare payments to people who over-consumed for a lifetime and did not save for their old age needs. America can be strong again once we get rid of these welfare leeches.  Once we are rid of these leeches, we can really fight wars. And show people who is boss.Republicans regard Social Security as an “unfunded liability,” that is, a giveaway that isinterfering with our war-making ability.  Alas, Social Security is an unfunded liability, because all the money working people put into it was stolen by Republicans and Democrats in order to pay for wars and bailouts for mega-rich bankers like Goldman Sachs. What I am about to tell you might come as a shock, but it is the absolute truth, which you can verify for yourself by going online to the government’s annual OASDI and HI reports.  According to the official 2010 Social Security reports, between 1984 and 2009 the American people contributed $2 trillion, that is $2,000 billion, more to Social Security and Medicare in payroll taxes than was paid out in benefits.  What happened to the surplus $2,000 billion, or $2,000,000,000,000.Over the past quarter century, $2 trillion in Social Security and Medicare revenues have been used to finance wars and pork-barrel projects of the US government.  Depending on assumptions about population growth, income growth and other factors, Social Security continues to be in the black until after 2025 or 2035 under the “high cost” and “intermediate” assumptions and the current payroll tax rate of 15.3% based on the revenues paid in and the interest on those surplus revenues. Under the low cost scenario, Social Security (OASDI) will have produced surplus revenues of $31.6 trillion by 2085.When I was Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury, Deputy Assistant Secretary Steve Entin worked out a way to put Social Security on a sound basis with the current rate of payroll tax without requiring one cent of general revenues.  You can read about it in chapter 9 of my book, The Supply-Side Revolution, which Harvard University Press has kept in print for more than a quarter century.  Entin’s solution, or a variation of it, would still work, so Social Security can easily be saved within the current payroll tax rate. Instead of acknowledging this incontrovertible fact, the right-wing wants to terminate the program.Treasury was blocked from putting Entin’s plan into effect by the fact that other parts of the government and the Greenspan Social Security Commission had agendas different from ensuring a sound Social Security system. Wall Street insisted that the Reagan tax rate reductions would explode consumer spending, cause inflation and destroy the values of stock and bond portfolios.  When inflation collapsed instead of exploding, Wall Street said that the deficits, which resulted from inflation’s collapse, would cause inflation and destroy the values of stock and bond portfolios. This didn’t happen either.Nevertheless, the Greenspan commission played to these mistaken fears.  The “Reagan deficits” could not cause inflation, because they were the result of the unanticipated collapse of inflation (anticipated only by supply-side economists). As I demonstrated in a paper published in the 1980s in the US, UK, Japan, Germany, Italy, and other countries, tax revenues were below the forecast amounts because inflation, and thus nominal GNP, were below forecast. The collapse of inflation also made real government spending higher than intended as the spending figures in the five-year budget were based on higher inflation than was realized. The subsidy to the US government from the payroll tax is larger than the $2 trillion in excess revenue collections over payouts.  The subsidy of the Social Security payroll tax to the government also includes the fact that $2.8 trillion of US government debt obligations are not in the market.  If the national debt held by the public were $2.8 trillion larger, so would be the debt service costs and most likely also the interest rate. The money left over for war would be even smaller. More would have to be borrowed or printed. The difference between the $2 trillion in excess Social Security revenues and the $2.8 trillion figure is the $0.8 trillion that is the accumulated interest over the years on the mounting $2 trillion in debt, if the Treasury had had to issue bonds, instead of non-marketable IOUs, to the Social Security Trust Fund. When the budget is in deficit, the Treasury pays interest by issuing new bonds in the amount of the interest due. In other words, the interest on the debt adds to the debt outstanding. The robbed Social Security Trust Fund can only be made good by the US Treasury issuing another $2.8 trillion in US government debt to pay off its IOUs to the fund. When a government is faced with a $14 trillion public debt growing by trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see, how does it add another $2.8 trillion to the mix? Therefore, to avoid repaying the $2.8 trillion that the government has stolen for its wars and bailouts for mega-rich bankers, the right-wing has selected entitlements as the sacrificial lamb. A government that runs a deficit too large to finance by borrowing will print money as long as it can.  When the printing press begins to push up inflation and push down the exchange value of the dollar, the government will be tempted to reduce its debt by reneging on entitlements or by confiscating private assets such as pension funds. When it has confiscated private assets and reneged on public obligations, nothing is left but the printing press. We owe the end-time situation that we face to open-ended wars and to an unregulated financial system concentrated in a few hands that produces financial crises by leveraging debt to irresponsible levels. The government of the United States does not represent the American people.  It represents the oligarchs.  The way campaign finance and elections are structured, the American people cannot take back their government by voting. A once proud and free people have been reduced to serfdom.

India Confirms a Massive Chamber on the Moon

The Indian Space Research Organization has discovered a "giant underground chamber" near the Moon's equator, in the Oceanus Procellarum area discovered by the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft—more than one mile long (1.7 kilometers) and 393 feet wide (120 meters)-big enough to contain a small lunar city.

The Indian researchers have published a paper detailing their findings and talking about the possibility of making this giant underground vault as a future human base. The settlement would be protected from radiation, micro-meteor impacts, dust and extreme temperature changes by the lava structure that provides a natural environmental control with a nearly constant temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit), unlike that of the lunar surface showing extreme variation, maximum of 130 degrees Celsius (266 degrees Fahrenheit) to a minimum of minus 180 degrees Celsius (-292 degrees Fahrenheit) in its diurnal (day-night) cycle.
In addition, lunar explorers would only need minimal construction, without the added cost of having to use expensive shields against the hazardous lunar environment.
