Alpine Meadows Webcam at Gunners Knob 7:05 AM Mar, 21Guest post by Russ Steele
I am sure that you all remember this article in the San Francisco Chronicle in October of 2006.
(10-27-2006) 04:00 PDT Norden, Nevada County — For the ski industry, both in California and rest of the nation, there is no greater truth than global warming, with its threat of a shrinking snowpack and the point that Yogi Berra once made so succinctly: “The future ain’t what it used to be.” … If nothing is done to curb emissions, greenhouse gas emissions could raise Sierra temperatures another 5 or 6 degrees by the end of the 21st century, according to some projections. The snowpack could be reduced by 89 percent.
It all came rushing back to be when I read this on the Alpine Meadows web site:
Current Snow Conditions: Alpine is Closed – Too much snow to safely enjoy. (Extreme Avalanche Danger and High Winds)
Right now it looks like the Alpine Meadows could use some global warming to stay in business.
UPDATE: It looks like the winds have subsided enough, as of 6:37AM with an update Monday morning they have removed the warning, after all, they don’t want all the heavy snow to scare customers away. Here’s the current snow depths:

…Perspective on Radiation Levels:
Here’s a chart showing the range of radiation levels in milli sieverts (mSv). Currently up to 400mSv per hour are being recorded in the immediate vicinity of Fukushima. Remember, although these figures may suggest that the level of radiation being recorded at Fukushima is not extremely high, the danger is constant exposure over a period of time. For this reason, people within the 20km evacuation zone are at high risk of serious harm.
7,000-10,000mSv – Person dies from radiation poisoning. (Full body exposure). 1,000mSv – Nausea and vomiting (Full body exposure). 500mSv – Decrease of lymphocytes in peripheral blood (white blood cells that defend your body) (Full body exposure). 200mSv – No clinical conditions confirmed below this number 10mSv – 1 year’s worth of natural radiation (Brazil) 6.9mSv – CT scan 2.4mSv – 1 year’s worth of natural radiation (world average) 1mSv – Limit of one’s year’s exposure to non-natural radiation (excluding medical examinations) 0.6mSv – Stomach X-ray 0.2mSv – A return air trip from Tokyo to New York 0.05mSv – Chest X-ray (or the level of radiation expected around a nuclear power plant – in practice it is much lower than this)

…Report from Mito, Japan:
In Mito, another town in the area, long lines formed outside a damaged supermarket as hundreds waited for medicine, water and other supplies. Supplies ran low as people stocked up, not knowing how long it would take for fresh goods to arrive.
“All the shops are closed, this is one of the few still open. So I came to buy and stock up on diapers, drinking water and food,” Kunio Iwatsuki, 68, told Reuters.

As the world braces itself for Saudi Arabia’s “day of rage” on Friday, which many fear could be the spark that sends oil prices soaring to beyond the $200 a barrel mark, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal issued a veiled threat to the United States, warning that the Kingdom was prepared to “cut foreign fingers” in the event of any outside interference.
The “day of rage” was been organized by Saudi youths using a Facebook page that has attracted over 17,000 members. A message posted on the page also called for a “Saudi Revolution” demanding democratic and political reform on March 20.
48 hours ahead of the first protest, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal issued a stern message to outsiders who saw the demonstrations as an opportunity to advance geopolitical plans against the oil-rich country.
Claiming the protests violated, “The Koran and the way of the Prophet,” Faisal vowed that the Kingdom would “cut off” any accusing finger of foreign nations who condemned the government’s response to the Shiite protests, which is expected to be brutal.
“Faisal, who is the nephew of King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz, said Saudi Arabia “rejects any foreign interference in its internal affairs,” reports RIA Novosti.
Although the warning is ostensibly a shot across the bow aimed at the Iranian government, which has encouraged Saudi revolutionaries to take on the Kingdom, it is also undoubtedly a veiled threat directed towards the United States, after the US made it clear that it expected the Saudi Kingdom to respect protesters’ rights to freedom of expression.
Are we seeing a repeat of what happened to Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak, with the United States planning to hijack the protests and double cross their traditional ally in a stunning geopolitical stunt that would send shock waves across the globe?
It is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that, just as we have witnessed in Libya, the US military-industrial complex could hijack the fallout from a revolution in Saudi Arabia and use it as a vehicle through which to advance geopolitical maneuvers in the name of “humanitarian” assistance or “maintaining stability”.
But could this stretch to an actual military campaign directed against the Saudi Kingdom? Let’s not forget that in 1973, when King Faisal imposed an oil embargo on countries that supported Israel during the October War, the United States, and specifically top globalist and then US State Secretary Henry Kissinger, considered attacking Saudi Arabia’s oil fields.
“The message was not specific about the measures they were going to take, but it appeared that they would use force. A CIA representative gave me the unsigned message, telling me it was from Kissinger… I went to the king and conveyed its contents,” said Prince Turki Al-Faisal, former intelligence chief and ambassador to Washington.
As Lindsey Williams has documented from his inside sources, the global elite are trying desperately to engineer a geopolitical climate that will sustain high oil prices. Chaos and instability in the region is the perfect cocktail to achieve this agenda. By manipulating weak and embryonic governments, the globalists can also rebuild the region in their image, using the wave of revolts to topple so-called “rogue states” like Iran and entrench the new world order. Billionaire elitist George Soros has called for Iran to be targeted in “the bloodiest of revolutions”.
The ultra-rich are completely unaffected by the impact of soaring food and fuel prices, which only really denigrate the living standards of the poor and the middle class. In the march towards a “post -industrial revolution” and a “green economy,” traditional energy sources must be kept at a premium through high prices and artificial scarcity. The more control over oil fields, and specifically the more the globalists can curtail oil production, the closer to reality their “post-industrial revolution” becomes.
Analysts are virtually unanimous in predicting that any sustained revolt in the Saudi Arabia would send oil prices beyond $200 and completely derail any notion of a global economic recovery, which is precisely what the global elite wants. By allowing only anemic economic growth at best and simultaneously overseeing crippling inflation, the *****crats can achieve their dream of eviscerating the prosperity and independence of a strong middle class.
Instability in Saudi Arabia will only further that ultimate goal, not hasten it, which is why the US military-industrial complex will be waiting in the wings to exploit any unrest just as they are now preparing to do in Libya.

03/04/11 Waterford, Ireland – “Ireland is broke,” said our taxi driver.
We like to ask cab drivers about the economy. Not that they understand anything any better than the average central bank economist. But they talk to people. Without cameras or tape recorders in the background. And they have their own businesses too. When times are good, people take cabs. When they are bad, they take the bus.
“My bloody income is down by 50%. Most of my fares are people coming or going on business…or just people going to work. But now, who’s doing business? Who’s working?
“The developers and the bankers ruined this country. They pushed up prices. And then, what was the government doing? They haven’t a clue. The guy who is head of Ireland’s financial affairs is a former schoolteacher. I’ve got nothing against schoolteachers, but what does he know of finance? And he’s over there negotiating with the Germans.
“The Germans know what they’re doing. They don’t want to finance our mistakes. And who can blame them?”
In many ways, the Great Correction is hitting Ireland harder than the USA. If the US overbuilt, Ireland overbuilt even more. If the US over-borrowed, Ireland borrowed even more. And if the USA got lost in debt finance, Ireland got lost in dreamland.
“We are dreamers, I guess. And storytellers. It’s a status thing in Ireland. You go into a bar. Look for the fellow who has the most people gathered around him. He’s the big man locally. Not the doctor. Not the politician. Not the rich man.
“We’re dreamers and storytellers…and then, we come to believe our own stories. “
The Irish dream big. The republic is not big enough for them. So they go abroad. Only 4 million of them are left on the island. Some 60 million of their descendants – the Irish diaspora – live in America, Canada, Australia, Argentina and elsewhere. Your editor is one of them.
For the first time in more than a decade, the Irish are emigrating again.
“If you’re a smart young man or woman, what else can you do? It’s sad for their families. But Ireland has nothing to offer them. They have to leave. And usually, they don’t come back.”
Yesterday, we went to open an account at the Bank of Ireland.
“They must have been glad to see you,” said a colleague. “You must be the first person to open an account in years. The rest of us are taking our money out. Every bank in Ireland is insolvent, and everybody knows it.”
“Well, there was no line,” we replied.
Instead, we got to the bank door at 10AM. We rang the doorbell (the bank didn’t open until 10:30, but we had an appointment). A dignified older man in a sweater and a tie opened the heavy oak door.
We stated our business.
“Oh…yes… She’s waiting for you.”
In front of us was an attractive woman of about 30. Well dressed. Well coifed.
“Will I lose my money if the bank goes broke?” I asked.
“Ha ha… There’s no chance of that,” said the woman with a look of earnest intensity that you usually associate with time-share salesmen and insane people. “I guess you would say that we’re already broke, technically. But we have a deal with the European Central Bank. We have a line of credit. We won’t default. And even if we did, your money is protected by an Irish government scheme that protects depositors up to 100,000 euros.”
“Well, isn’t the Irish government insolvent too?”
“Ha ha… Well, I suppose that it is too. Technically. But so is your American government, isn’t it? But this is just a technicality. The whole system is not going to go broke. We’re supported by Europe. And Europe does not want to see Ireland default.”
She was right about that. Europe does not want to see Ireland default. Because the debts of Ireland are the credits of French and German banks. If Ireland were allowed to default, the whole kit and caboodle could come apart.
Ireland can’t borrow on the open market. Lenders are not idiots. So the Micks and Paddies borrow from the European financial authorities. The low rates keep Irish households above water. Most mortgages here are “floating rate” loans. If the rates were allowed to float up to market levels, Irish households, banks, and the government itself, would all sink.
For the moment, Europe lends at low interest rates to the Irish…who keep their banks and voters from going bust. The banks, in turn, keep their creditors from going bust. And so the whole system, in Europe as in America and Japan, depends on a continued flow of artificially cheap money
And everyone seems to think this flow of cheap money can continue indefinitely.
Welcome to the modern political economy… Small, isolated problems are rolled up into bigger and bigger ones. Soon, the danger is not to a bank…or even to a nation…but to the entire system.
We don’t know when it will stop. Nor do we know exactly what will make it stop. But we’re sure there’s money to be made betting on it.
