Back in August of 2010, it was reported that a SuperBug strain called NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1), had been discovered in the UK with links back to India. Today, in April of 2011, the ‘Lancet infectious Diseases journal’ reports that bacteria carrying the NDM-1 SuperBug has been discovered in the drinking water supply of New Delhi.
The Health Protection Agency has warned that 88 cases have been recorded so far.
The director of the HPA said that modern medicine will crumble if antibiotic-resistant strains overtake the ability to perform even simple and common procedures where the role of antibiotics fighting infections are crucial for recovery. “It’s vital to grasp that fighting the emergence of resistance is fighting evolution itself” said Dr. David Livermore.
There are barely a handful of antibiotics currently in the pipeline to fight antibiotic resistant bacteria. “The worldwide spread of genes resistant to last-resort antibiotics is a nightmare scenario” the World Heath Organization has said.
The WHO said the abuse of antibiotics for people and the abuse within the food chain is threatening to take the world to an era before the discovery of penicillin in the 1920's.
