In a previous article, high-orac-value-antioxidant-foods-top-100, Turmeric ranked number 6 of the top 100 high ORAC value antioxidant foods (OK, it’s a spice).

ORAC units measure the antioxidant capacity of foods.

Turmeric is a spice that gives curry powder its yellow hue and peppery flavor. Turmeric is popular in foods of the Caribbean, India, North Africa, Indonesia, and the Middle East. It has been used to treat arthritis and abdominal ailments in parts of the world and according to the Environmental Nutrition Newsletter, it is one of the most promising spices in health research.

Those who are exploring ideas relating to survivalism and preparedness may sometimes become caught up in the traditional aspects of prepping such as building a supply of extra food, supplies, and a host of other items, knowledge and skills (all of which are perfectly fine and necessary), however when it comes to health and nutrition, we sometimes overlook things such as the value of including optimized foods in our arsenal of preps.

Knowing that certain foods or spices are highly beneficial to your health, may attribute to a better life, particularly if healthcare becomes hard to find. Remember, preventative maintenance is far better than a breakdown.

In India, where turmeric is commonly consumed, they have the lowest rates of colorectal cancer in the world. Lab studies have demonstrated suppression of various cancer cells while the most exciting areas of turmeric research according to ‘Environmental Nutrition’ is in Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s among adults aged 70 – 79 in India is 4.4 times lower than in the U.S.

So you see, simple but educated decisions of changes to your diet may go a long way towards assuring a better chance of staying healthy and living longer. Turmeric is one effective example of this.

Turmeric grows wild in the forests of Southeast Asia. So, unless you live in very warm and wet regions like this, you won’t successfully grow it yourself. Instead, stock up on the spice and start experimenting with it in your recipes!

Here is an example of Ground Turmeric Root available at a major online retailer.

Many of the Turmeric reviews are similar to the following:

I suffer from migraines, and this has been the only thing that helps, it beats any over the counter and prescription meds. I take one teaspoon with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper and within 15 minutes my pain is gone. Also works wonders on my joints and muscle pain. Now I’m a believer in natural remedies. If you suffer from headaches or arthritis give this a try!! It does not taste bad at all.
