Big Brother and 2012

Big Brother didn't quite make it for 1984, but he appears to be right on time to take over every aspect of our lives by the year 2012.

George Orwell's dystopian novel, "1984" (written in 1948), portrayed a future where people were completely controlled by a shadowy Party, epitomized by the figure of Big Brother.

When 1984 actually rolled around, most of us could still say we enjoyed a great deal of personal and economic freedom. How many would say that now? Will any of us be able to honestly say it by the time 2012 arrives?

The 2012 prophecies predict a soul-crushing totalitarian society that will be global in scope, with no way to escape.

My gloomy thoughts on this matter were triggered by hearing about a bill introduced into the U.S. Congress that would mandate the federal and state governments to start tracking how fat or skinny our children are.

Sounds fairly harmless, but you can imagine where it will lead. Some bureaucrat may decide that we have been under- or overfeeding little Johnny and Sue, or feeding them the "wrong" food, and we will be forced to pay with our pocketbooks or our freedom - or perhaps lose custody of our own offspring.

The so-called Healthy Choices Act is just one more link in the chains being fastened on us, in my opinion.

The people making predictions for 2012 warn us that things will get worse over the coming months, leading first to a global dictatorship (is this what the New World Order is?) and then to a final cataclysmic event on or around December 21, 2012.

There is reason for hope, though, despite predictions of doom and destruction. According to some who have studied the 2012 prophecies, the cataclysm will be a transformative event that enables us to transcend the negativity of our present world, including systems of enslavement. We will - every one of us - ascend to a new level of knowledge and understanding, with peace and voluntary cooperation our new operating principles.

After dystopia comes utopia, is the message of these seers. After reaching the heights of power, Big Brother will suddenly wither before our eyes and freedom will reign, they are saying.
