Why guns are important in an urban survival situation

I?ve noticed some people here are asking why guns are necessary in a SHTF scenario. In a short term situation such as a hurricane or an earthquake you can likely get by without having to use a firearm, although your chance of being a victim of a violent crime is greatly increased, which would make a gun come in useful. If you decide not to pack a gun in your BOB or have one in the house, you probably can still survive.

In a total civilization and government collapse that you can?t simply walk/drive away from, anyone who does not have a firearm is going to die. You cannot survive that without firearms. I think this scenario is disturbingly likely due to our dependence on the oil industry for our survival. It requires oil to get the seeds to the fields, to plow the fields, to harvest, and to distribute the raw resources to the processing plants and then to distribute the products to you. Your food may be produced far away from where you live. Also given the unprecedentedly large number of people who are dependent on a tiny number of people to produce their food and that most people don?t even know anything about how their food is made I think we have made ourselves very vulnerable to a modern super-famine of a magnitude that has never occurred. If you live in a city things will be much worse than for rural inhabitants. I suspect that panicked hungry people will turn to killing and eating animals and livestock, they may enter areas that warehouse seeds for farming and consume them, which would effectively eliminate the ability to produce food and animals don't spawn out of thin air, they have to go through the same reproductive cycle we do, so a loss of 99% of livestock will result in a situation where we are not able to bring supply up to pre SHTF levels for generations. Every year there are more and more government dependents who think that other people owe them their necessities and this entitlement to the property of others will not disappear once the welfare checks, CHIP, health care benefits, food stamps, or whatever giveaway program dries up. They will be out looking for someone to give them what they need and when they don?t get it they will be willing to chop you up with a machete or hit you with a crow bar in order to get your supplies. The point is the world would become a very dangerous place and if you don?t have firearms and the skills to use them you will die. If you have political hate for or unreasonable fear of firearms, that?s fine, not everyone is meant to survive a serious societal collapse, but a serious survivalist knows a firearm is an important tool to have.

If you are handicapped by a political hate for or unreasonable fear of guns then I suggest including a means of suicide in your supplies, because swallowing a pill will be better than being chopped up by a machete.
