Millions of Dead Fish near Los Angeles

Redondo Beach California, Kings Harbor, millions of dead Anchovies were discovered during the morning of March 8 clogging parts of the harbor. It is literally a ‘sea of Anchovies’ many feet thick, not just on the surface.

Some residents are saying that in all their life they’ve never seen such a dramatic fish kill as this. Others are wondering if the Anchovies are like the canary in the coal mine and perhaps an undersea seafloor release of sulfur dioxide or methane may have killed them and could be a sign of an impending earthquake. All speculation of course.

One ‘official’ explanation so far is that “they were trying to flee the red tide and they all suffocated”. Another is that the Anchovies were all blown into the harbor last night during excessive winds, and all suffocated.

So far there have been no reports at all of a red tide in the area, and are usually quite visible when they occur. Additionally, a red tide event would logically effect more than just Anchovies, and no other significant observations have been reported yet. The LA Times did mention Sardines and Mackerel as well as the Anchovies, but as far as the eye can see in the images, it’s all Anchovies.

Some wonder why we don’t see tremendous flocks of seabirds or gulls taking natural advantage of an enormous free meal(s).

In any event, it is quite a spectacle, and time will tell if this is a case of ‘bad weather’, ‘red tide’, or something else…

Got your earthquake kit ready?

Gaddafi Warns France: If I Go Down, You Will Be Flooded With “Millions Of Blacks”

Libya is an important partner for the West in containing al Qaeda and illegal migrants trying to reach Europe, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said on Monday, in an apparent warning to governments planning sanctions.

“Libya plays a vital role in regional peace and world peace,” he said in an interview with the France 24 television station. “We are an important partner in fighting al Qaeda.”

“There are millions of blacks who could come to the Mediterranean to cross to France and Italy, and Libya plays a role in security in the Mediterranean,” he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Western governments have condemned Gaddafi for the killings of hundreds of people since protests against his rule broke out last month. Several foreign leaders have demanded sanctions and an end to his four decades in power.

But in the past few years foreign governments, especially in southern Europe, have relied on Libyan help to stem the flow of sub-Saharan Africans migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean, and there has also been some cooperation in combating al Qaeda.

Gaddadi has denied his security forces shot innocenent people, and in the interview on Monday repeated his assertion that the violence was orchestrated by al Qaeda.

“The African Union has sent a commission of enquiry to show that what is published about Libya abroad is 100 percent lies,” Gaddafi said in the interview.

“The world has an image which is not based on anything and which is unreasonable,” he said. “A distorted image has been formed of peaceful demonstrations.”

An official at the African Union headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, said a fact-finding mission was being planned but had yet to set off for Tripoli.
