You’ve Got to Milk This Market While It Lasts

By Mitchell Clark, B.Comm.

There are a lot of good trades out there in this kind of market—some of them are value trades, while others are momentum opportunities. With sentiment in the broader market quite positive, the likelihood of further capital gains in the main stock market averages is strong. After many years of following the stock market on a daily basis, I’ve gained a healthy respect for the other side of the market. I’m not referring to being short; what I’m talking about is risk. I spend as much time considering the risks associated with a potential equity investment as I do the potential return. Both are unknowns in the investing process, but risk is the one factor that you can try to mitigate as you manage your portfolio of holdings.

Investment risk is always high in the stock market for the simple reason that equity securities trade in a secondary market. Their value is derived by buyers and sellers who use all the information the marketplace has to offer. Stocks always have two kinds of risks for investors: individual company risk; and the risk inherent in changing market sentiment. Both these risks are entirely beyond your control as an individual shareholder and, because of this, your personal investment risk is always high.

Right now we have a stock market that’s trending higher based on the expectation of strong earnings results and a recovering economy. That’s the good news. However, ahead of us there are major headwinds in the form of inflation, sovereign debt, and a demographic shift that’s going to change the very nature of the consumer economy. It’s a lot for a long-term investor to deal with and it’s something we all have to be wary of as investors.

I feel confident that the right shoulder formation of the S&P 500 Index will be completed. This expectation is based on the broader market’s current valuation, the stability of current investor sentiment, and the outlook for solid corporate earnings this year. But, beyond 2011, the commodity price cycle is going to force higher interest rates to deal with price inflation, which I think is more pronounced in the economy than the numbers indicate. Add in the likelihood of country defaults in Europe and I can easily see a marketplace where investor confidence disappears.

We’re not in a bull market for stocks at this time; we’re in a Fed-induced re-inflation of the economy and the stock market. On balance, I think the action is working, but the “free” money won’t last much longer, because global markets won’t let it. This means that the business cycle is going to change and it will be a whole new ballgame for the stock market and investors.

I remain optimistic about the economy and the stock market. I also remain wary of the systemic risks we face going forward. You can’t have investment returns without incurring investment risk. The key is to manage both in a way that keeps you covered when the marketplace changes. Make no mistake; the two constants in the investment business are change and risk.

Disaster Relief 2.0: While you looked…West

Ed note: The report Disaster Relief 2.0: The Future of Information Sharing in Humanitarian Emergencies analyzes how the humanitarian community and the emerging volunteer and technical communities worked together in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and recommends ways to improve coordination between these two groups in future emergencies.  The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), together with the United Nations Foundation and Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership, commissioned the report, which was researched and written by a team at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

The Disaster Relief 2.0 Blog Series provides a public forum for people from both the humanitarian and volunteer and technical communities to discuss ideas in this report and the future of disaster relief.

You can follow conversations about the report on Twitter using the hashtag #DisasterTech and on the UN Foundation’s Facebook page. Readers can submit questions to the report’s authors through those channels; a transcript with answers to select questions will be published on UN Dispatch on April 11, 2011.

While you looked…West

Haiti.

Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Benin, Haiti, Haiti.
Kyrgyzstan. Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti. Pakistan, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti. DRC, Haiti, Haiti, Haiti. Somalia, how can IT help. Haiti, Haiti, Pakistan, Haiti, Haiti, Philippines, Haiti.

If you are involved in any role in humanitarian response, be that IT, planning, management, logistic or anything else, your 2010 has been similar to the above. You probably heard the word Haiti thirty times more than any other country. You’ve planned for it, you fundraised, you executed, you supported, you monitored, you learned the lesson. And very likely, you are now busy ensuring that the lessons we all learned from Haiti really sink into your organization and the ‘next Haiti’ will be better, faster, more cost-effective, more inclusive. You will access more information, you will share it better – and therefore, you will better cooperate with partners and ultimately provide better assistance to the people in need.

Benin, somewhere in West Africa, Q3 2010. “Thousands of homes damaged in heavy rains and hundreds of cholera cases reported” (the Guardian), “It is the worst flooding to hit the country – one of the poorest in the world – since 1963. Areas previously thought not to be vulnerable to flooding have been devastated and villages wiped out” (BBC). Two thirds of the country under water. 700,000 people homeless – it’s as if the entire population of Amsterdam was suddenly homeless. But it was not Amsterdam. The question is: how can the ‘new IT tools’ provide assistance in such a situation in Benin, where donor attention and resources are scarce, and therefore their optimal utilization is even more important?

Today, more than a year after Haiti, while learning the lessons, we need to keep in mind that Haiti was unique. It revolutionized the importance, the needs and services that we can and should provide in emergencies. But we need to think and ask ourselves how often there will be ‘another Haiti’, and how learning from Haiti can benefit the Benins, the Kyrgyzstans, the Myanmars and, why not, the DRC and the Somalia.

There is another challenge ahead of us: in situations… like Haiti… there are massive IT resources poured into the country. The private sector, the UN, the Non-Government Community, schools, universities, … individuals. Everyone wants to help. In WFP we have a saying that ‘everything that the humanitarian community needs in terms of IT has already been invented’ – and if it hadn’t before, it has been invented during Haiti. Our challenge is integrating all such tools, ensuring we don’t duplicate efforts and re-invent the wheel, and, mostly, that our IT efforts are all integrated and complement each other. And ensure that they can be used effectively by large and small, but not less important, humanitarian organizations.

The next humanitarian emergency won’t be IN Haiti. It won’t be LIKE Haiti. The next emergency is today, while I type, in Cote d’Ivoire, where the lives of humanitarian workers (yes, the people who are there to help) are at risk.

Ah. I fell in the same trap. Aside from the first paragraph, the word Haiti appears 11 times, while Benin only 3, and Cote d’Ivoire only once… It’ll be hard.

Obama Fiddles While Fukushima Burns

With the world on fire, the President goes AWOL again

History tells us that Nero fiddled while Rome burned, but Barack Obama is providing the famous emperor with some serious competition when it comes to going AWOL while America and the world face crises the likes of which haven’t been experienced in decades.

Even as the situation at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant continues to worsen by the hour, and as radiation surges across the Pacific towards the U.S. west coast while Americans panic buy supplies of potassium iodide, President Obama seems remarkably sanguine about the whole affair.

While protests and civil wars rage in Libya and Bahrain, Obama is keeping himself busy by videotaping his NCAA tournament picks, hitting the golf course for the 61st time in his presidency, and partying with lawmakers during a Chicago Bulls vs. Charlotte Bobcats game.

The most energy Obama could bother to devote to what is fast coming one of the biggest nuclear disasters in history was to make an empty statement about how people could donate to usaid.gov, while labeling the NCAA exercise a “great diversion.”

While Japan begs the United States for help to rescue the dire situation at Fukushima, Obama seems more concerned about dressing up nicely to please the media elite at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

Even as the planet faces the threat of a “new Chernobyl on steroids,” Obama has chosen to prioritize a speech about “Women’s History Month,” a White House get-together on “bullying” and a meeting with the Chicago Blackhawks instead of offering any kind of leadership.

But forget Japan, it’s not as if Obama hasn’t got any matters to attend to on the home front, with gas prices surging as a result of an oil spike driven by turmoil in the middle east, as well as a massive budget crisis, not to mention the perilous state of the US dollar and the stuttering economy.

Obama’s fiddling has made the crucial deceision of whether or not to impose a no fly zone over Libya all but academic, with Colonel Gaddafi taking the opportunity to use the delay to crush rebel opponents in key regions.

“But the fun stuff won’t end anytime soon,” writes veteran White House reporter Keith Koffler, who accuses the President of succumbing to “childish distractions” while the world is afire. “On Thursday, the Taoiseach of Ireland will be in town to help the president celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And then Friday it’s off to Brazil for the start of a three-country Latin American tour.

Granted, Obama is not superman and nobody expects him to act as some kind of omnipotent savior, but the remarkable regularity with which Obama goes AWOL when crises hit not just globally but also in America has become characterisitic of his whole presidency.

Lest we forget that during the course of the devastating BP oil spill crisis, Obama took no less than three vacations, disappearing from public view at the very height of the drama when Americans were desperate for a leader.

Obama’s behavior exemplifies the fact that he is a completely hollow sock-puppet of a president. After being billed as an icon for hope, change and fresh leadership as America sought to reclaim its global reputation, Obama has been nothing but a crushing disappointment and a massive failure.

The whole farce reminds us once again that Obama, like George W. Bush before him, controls absolutely nothing, has no influence on world affairs, and has now stopped even bothering to maintain the pretense that he is anything other than an obedient yes-man whose role comprises of nothing more than following orders from the Wall Street and banking elite that have pulled his strings from the very beginning.

Your Best Defense: Man Causes Widespread Radiation While Nature Provides The Solution

Submitted by Jonathan on Thu, 03/17/2011 - 1:28am.

First of all, you'd better hope you already have some Atomic Iodine (the natural form required by the body) or Potassium Iodide (KI) in your emergency kit. If you don't already have some stashed in case of emergency, there's not much you can do besides call a friend that has some or wait for your much beloved and trusted government to conveniently deliver it hours, or even days after it is too late. Of course, that's if they deliver at all.  Relying on the government to help is not a good idea.  If you are interested in learning of other ways to protect yourself from radiation, you may find it inside this article.  If you are looking for amounts, see "How much" (version 1.a)

(Attention: There will likely be revisions to this article which can be tracked by checking the version number above.  Updates will be marked inside.)

DISCLAIMER: By reading this article, the entity or entities engaged agree(s) to not hold me or any other entity which I am associated with responsible, accountable or otherwise cause harm to any facility of our existence based on the informations contained herein.  All information in this article can be obtained on the internet and from other resources which are available, and therefore the internet serves as the primary source for this information.

In January of 2008 John Marburger, President Bush's top science adviser stated, “The focus on evacuation should not be diverted or confused by attempts to distribute (the pills),” and also because, according to Marburger, the Potassium Iodine pills “offer negligible additional protection” for those living outside of the 10 mile area the government will cover in such an disaster. Don't expect them to give you “the pills.” [1]

I hope people will come to realize the severe mineral and vitamin deficiencies a person can have.  My job is not actually to convince my readers that they are deficient in the life that this earth itself naturally provides, but to inform you that because you are deficient of the proper nutrients, your body is just begging to soak up the radioactive forms of the elements you are deficient in.

For example, because your thyroid requires iodine, it will suck up the radioactive iodine (I-131) that the fall-out brings. I-131 has a half life of 8 days.  This is the same I-131 that is administered by the medical community to suppress thyroid function in Graves' Disease. I-123 (half-life 13 hours) is the radioactive isotope used in nuclear medicine imaging of the thyroid.  Note that even though the radioactive forms of iodine have their uses, they are very toxic and should never be consumed for any reason.

Due to the way the jet streams circulate around the globe, we should all be concerned. If after the first reactor exploded, the West coast was in the region shown as being in the 750 RADS (yellow) fall-out area, and the explosion at reactor number 4 was proportedly 20 times worse, doesn’t that mean that even the west coast could be in the fall-out area of 1500 RADS (orange) or more (red)?  Reactor number 5 and now on to reactor number 6… We should ALL worry about this.  It’s GLOBAL!

See note below photo.

Fukushima explosionI am using the photo above to illustrate the fall-out concentrations and coverage just after the FIRST REACTOR EXPLOSION and is NOT a representation of the much higher levels of fall-out that we can now expect.  How bad do you think it will be?  Currently  reactor number 6 is, as of this writing, overheating and will most likely explode. There are 11 reactors in total. Not to fear, there are quite a few ways of dealing with exposure to radioactive iodine such as using activated charcoal to scavenge the radioactive iodine from the system, including thyroid, in conjunction with the administration of Potassium Iodide within 30 minutes of exposure will help to rebalance the thyroid's function and will prevent significant damage to the thyroid.  Just a note: Iodine is not the only radioactive isotope that we need to be concerned about.

Depending upon the various factors leading to the severity of exposure, the window of which the administration of life-saving treatment indefinitely varies.  Please note that Potassium Iodide/Iodate are not the natural colloidal forms (nature already breaks down the various essential minerals and conveniently places it in plants) of iodine and can therefore bioaccumulate and cause damage.

One definitely wants to make sure that if their home is drafty, find a way to minimize or stop the cross drafting ventilation factor which is provided by drafty windows, doors and even cracks in the walls.  Secure the above ground areas for drafting while preparing to go into the basement, should their be one.  The fall-out will contaminate everything that it falls on.

N95 masks are also suggested to be available should the individual need to go outside during this time period, or if the "fall-out" shelter is drafty and possible heavy exposure expected.

There are ways of detoxing the radioactive elements from your body, but that doesn't entirely undo the damage caused as the damage occurs because of being deficient of iodine and other minerals in the first place.

The things that can be taken to help chelate (scavange) the metals out of the body are atomic iodine, bentonite clay, activated charcoal, diatomaceous earth (fossil shell flour), sea kelp (because of the abundance of a vast array of minerals, vitamins, himalayan salt, macro- and micronutrients, and phytonutrients including also idodine), cilantro, parsley, garlic, ginger among many others.

I have included additional information about Seakelp in the conclusion of this article, and how it relates to protection and detoxification of radiation exposure. However, due to the extremely indepth and ever-broadening nature of chemistry, I cannot fit it all here.

You will find some information regarding radiation exposure, bromide detox reaction and the results of using Seakelp in this article as well as how its use helped during the massive exposure to radiation that occured with the tragedies of Nagasaki and Chernobyl.

The next article will be focused on undoing the damage caused by exposure to radiation so be sure to check back.  I will post it as soon as I can.

Iodine is an essential mineral which is responsible for the proper function of much more than just the thyroid. There are receptors all throughout the body. All glandular tissue, including the breasts, uterus, prostate, testes, skin, pancreas, salivary glands, stomach, intestines, brain and eyes all require this mineral.

The thyroid gland, a major component of the Endocrine system (pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, testes, thyroid gland and adrenal glands are examples of the glands that comprise the endocrine system), requires iodine for proper regulation the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

We are severely deficient in iodine and therefore our thyroids will readily absorb any radioactive iodine present in the blood (brought in via inhalation or absorption through the dermis).

In fact, iodine deficiency leads to many intentionally falsely diagnosed medical conditions. Enlargement of the thyroid is an indicator that the deficiency has gone past just being a simple deficiency and has become the starting point of many other seemingly unrelated diseases.

Just a brief into what happens when we are deficient of iodine:

Dr Kellman of the Centre for Progressive Medicine in New York said, "Once damage to the thyroid takes place it affects all the other organs – starting with digestion and absorption. Toxins start accumulating in the system. You can have an array of symptoms: heart disease and its complications, high homocysteine levels, poor circulation, weight gain/loss, no appetite or binging, bloating, fluid retention, skin problems, aching joints, low blood pressure, high cholesterol, low libido, hair loss, and sensitivity to cold."

Iodine is needed in microgram amounts for the thyroid, mg amounts for breast and other tissues, and can be used therapeutically in gram amounts. [2]

Q. Which organs require the highest amount of iodine?

A. The breasts.

A very simple and effective test consists of placing iodine on the skin, mainly the bottom of the feet, and noting how long it takes before it disappears. The length of time it takes to absorb will determine how deficient of iodine the person is.  Apply iodine to a 2x2 inch area on the feet or stomach and see if it is gone in two hours.  If it is gone in two hours or less, the deficiency is most likely severe.

Bromide exists in nearly all consumer goods creating a wide-spread and ultimately deadly condition known as “Bromide Dominance.”  This is a condition where the intake of bromide displaces iodine from the thyroid, disrupts uptake of iodine respectively, in where Bromide has taken precedence over iodine in that we are simply not getting enough elemental iodine and too much (even a little bit is too much) bromide in the first place.

Bromine, a known carcinogen and recognized goitrogen, is in the Halogen family (Group 17) of elements which consist of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine while fluoride, chloride, bromide and iodide (and their oxidized forms) are complementary reduced forms of the halogens which are called halides. The halogen iodine and halide chloride are essential elements for our bodies as we have receptors for both.

For example, iodine and chloride are needed in adequate amounts for many crucial physiologic processes that occur, such as iodine being responsible for production of thyroid hormones (it has also been found that all cells require iodine), and chloride being necessary to keep inter- and intra-cellular hydration in balance. As you should know by now, your body is electrical and requires minerals to carry electrical impulses. Therefore, minerals are essentially electrolytes.

Elevated bromide levels have been implicated in every thyroid disease, from simple hypothyroidism to auto-immune diseases to thyroid cancer. Malenchenko found bromide levels 50 times higher in thyroid cancer than normal thyroid tissue.

Potassium bromate as an additive to most commercial bread and baked goods probably provides the most egregious contribution to bromide overload in Western cultures. [3]

Despite it's horrendously toxic effects, bromide is found in items such as swimming pool sanitization products, upholstery, plastics of vehicles and electronics as a fire-retardant material, as an additive in foods, is used to fumigate cargo and for certain other “decontamination” procedures, is an additive in soft drinks (Gatorade, Mountain Dew, etc.), bread, etc... I think you get the point. The above data suggest that we are already severely deficient in iodine to begin with. It's probably about time to start cleaning out the bromide, fluoride and perchlorate, and restore proper iodine levels so one can provide protection for themselves when a nuclear threat is near.

Iodide, the halide of the halogen Iodine, is less hydrophilic (likes water less) than Iodine does.  It also has a larger mass and therefore, as far as iodides which are produced outside of the body, are non-colloidal and cannot be used the same as naturally occuring Iodine.  Note: Iodide is also made inside of the body but by natural processes rather than by chemical manufacturing.  This makes a huge difference in how the body can use it.Fluoride, another known carcinogen and goitrogen, is a potent enzyme inhibitor (enzymes are required for breakdown and assimilation of nutrients) which poisons hundreds of enzymes in our bodies, also being known to cause cancer. Fluoride also displaces iodine from the thyroid. Fluorine, the halogen form, is the most reactive substance known to man, with fluoride being the halide (compound) of fluorine.  Fluoride has an affinity to build compounds with calcium and causes calcification in the pineal gland (another part of the endocrine system) and other glands/organs.Sodium Chloride, the halide of chlorine, is made from sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl). When combined, these elements form common table salt (NaCl).  It is not uncommon for manufacturers to add fluoride and other additives.

Instead of toxic table salt, try sea salt.  Sea salt has around 30 trace minerals, himalayan salt has 84 trace minerals.  Both will help lower your blood pressure instead of raising your blood pressure like table salt.  Trace minerals are absolutely required for good health and absolutely deficient in our diet.

Astatine, a radioactive halogen that occurs from the decay of uranium-235.Ununseptium, a newly descover halogen which is not well documented.

Chlorine (Cl), as in sodium hypochlorite (another goitrogen and a super oxidant), leeches iodine from the thyroid thereby suppressing thyroid function. Chlorine reacts with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) to form Oxygen (O2). Chlorine also reacts with Ammonia (NH3) to produce Chloramine (NH2Cl), the cousin of Chlorine Gas. Chlorine respectively reacts with Ammonium to produce Chlorine gas. Most bacteria in the digestive tract produce ammonia, while the rare few produce ammonium.

Halogens (Group 17, formerly group 7) readily react with the alkali metals (Group 1) lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), caesium or cesium (Cs) and francium (Fr). Hydrogen (H), in certain conditions will exhibit similar behavior to the alkali metals mentioned above.

Halides are the binary compounds of halogens, of which one part is a halogen atom and the other part is an element or radical that is less electronegative (or more electropositive) than the halogen.

** End Notes (UPDATED):

Kelp can bind with toxins such as radioactive isotopes, mercury, pharmaceuticals and many others, and transforms them into relatively harmless salts which are excreted in the urine; while Potassium Iodide (Ki) cannot.  During the Chernobly and Nagasaki disasters, Kelp was used extensively to remove radiation from people and the environment with a very high success rate in doing so.

Kelp is a very rich source of nutrition.  It contains vitamin A, B, E, D, and K.  It is an excellent source of vitamin C and is rich in minerals and proteins.  Kelp aids in digestion, purifies blood, relieves arthritis, stiffness, and promotes adrenal, pituitary and thyroid health.  It is also a demulcent that helps to eliminate herpes outbreaks.

Remember to be careful, should you experience any detox symptoms, you must realize that you may have high levels of bromide in your system and should be especially considerate of the detox reaction if you are pregnant, a child or in some way not healthy.  It could be “bromide dominance” that has been dominating your health for all of these years!

Detox reactions include, but are not limited to: eye lid twitching, foot twitching, tingling in hands or feet, dark thoughts (e.g., there is no reason to live), depression (e.g., there is no reason to get out of bed), anxiety, emotionality, mouth and tongue sores and cuts or "sore mouth", "different" acne,"bromide acne," "acne-like eruptions" without "coniform.", (Some iodine users found zinc helps bromide acne.), skin "cuts", hair loss, brain fog, leg and hip ache (feels like arthritis), rash (bromaderma), metallic taste, sinus ache, runny nose, headache, sedation, lethargy, odd swallowing sensation (reported in old  medical literature as "swollen glottis"), body odor (bromos is Greek for stench), unusual urine odor, dry mouth, ureteral spasm, frequent urination (mistaken for urinary infection), diarrhea, constipation, vision changes, irritability, increased salivation, dream changes, hormone changes, kidney pain, breast tenderness (transient symptom reported to resolve). [sourced and condensed from http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/bromidedetoxsymptomsandstrategies.html]

It really depends on the individual.  How long have they been deficient of the many nutrients the body needs? Because detox reactions can and are very likely to occur, be aware that the strange sensations you experience may very well be detox reactions from the many toxins (including bromide and fluoride) that have been stored in your body, and NOT necessarily effects of radiation poisoning.

I have read that 1-2 teaspoons of dried Seakelp per day is a good amount for nutrient supplementation of an adult.  Based upon weight, and the other factors shown here, an amount could be decided for children.  For radiation protection and remediation, more is required. If you are severely deficient (see how to test yourself above), there is vast empty and polluted cellular space inside just waiting to be filled, and therefore respectively will require the dosage to be adjusted.

Those on thyroid medications should be careful because the thyroid will now finally be getting the iodine that it needed all along and will likely cause the thyroid to become slightly overactive.  There are sources on the internet that suggest supplementation with Seakelp can even eliminate the need for synthetic thyroid medications altogether.

Someone mentioned recently about using Seakelp for fertilizer in his garden and had suggested that a clean source of Seakelp (from the North Atlantic) can be purchased from www.dirtworks.com.

Be sure to pay the extra for certified organic as the non-certified may come from other sources than the North Atlantic.

Build Your Retirement While Flying Solo

Nilus Mattive

It’s unfortunate, but the plain truth is that a lot of the very best retirement strategies just don’t get much play by the mainstream media.

Take that little-known Social Security payback provision that recently got closed down. Practically nobody was talking about it until it was no longer available!

Today, the same thing is true of the relatively-new Solo 401(k) retirement plan.

Yet if you’re self-employed it can be a terrific way to rapidly build your retirement nest egg.

Heck, even if you only do a little freelancing, it’s definitely something you should know about!

But before I explain the ins and outs of this off-the-radar retirement account …

Let’s First Review the Basics
Of Traditional 401(k) Plans

The 401(k) is the most common retirement plan now available to America’s average worker.

The name comes from section 401(k) of the Internal Revenue Code … which was added in 1978 by Congress.

What it meant: Starting in 1980, employees could avoid — temporarily — taxation on income they received as deferred compensation.

In other words, the money contributed was not counted for income tax purposes. Instead, it would be taxed — along with investment earnings — upon withdrawal (age 59 ½ or older; other withdrawals subject to immediate taxes and a 10 percent penalty).

I suppose you could say the idea proved popular: Within a few years about 20,000 plans had been established. And today that number is closer to 500,000!

In addition to the tax benefits, many plans also feature employer contributions, which provide a terrific incentive for employee participation.

And even when an employer kicks in some money, the 401(k) plan offers a company far less risk and far more freedom than a defined benefit pension plan.

For 2011, the maximum employee contribution is still $16,500, with another $5,500 catch-up contribution for workers 50 years or older.

I recommend contributing at least enough to get the maximum match from an employer. Even if you park everything in a money market fund, you are earning a risk-free return on your “investment.”

And as far as I’m concerned, the more you can put into a 401(k), the better. Period.

This Is Precisely Why the Solo 401(k) Is
Even Better Than a Regular Account!

Many of the self-employed have historically used SEP IRAs and Keogh plans to build up their retirements … while 401(k) plans remained strictly the domain of folks working for others, particularly big companies.

But a few years ago, all that changed when a new type of 401(k) plan — known as the Solo 401(k) became available.

Setting up a Solo 401(k) is extremely easy ... just fill out some basic paperwork!Setting up a Solo 401(k) is extremely easy … just fill out some basic paperwork!

As the name suggests, it was designed for sole proprietors. In fact, to participate in one, you must work for yourself and have no other employees besides your spouse.

Setting up a Solo 401(k) is relatively easy, and many of the big brokerage houses — including T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, Vanguard, and Charles Schwab — now offer them.

To establish a plan, you simply fill out some paperwork by the end of the calendar year in which you hope to begin contributing. Then, going forward, you make your contributions and manage your own investments. If your account reaches a value beyond $250,000 you must also furnish a report (form 5500) to the IRS annually.

Like regular 401(k) plans, you cannot withdraw the money until you reach 59 ½ … doing so before that point, will cost you a 10 percent penalty. There are also required minimum distributions starting at age 70 ½.

So far, it doesn’t sound all that special, right? Well, not until you talk about contribution limits!

While regular 401(k)s only allow you to put in $16,500, a Solo 401(k) participant can sock away as much as $49,000! (And if you’re over 50, you get another $5,500 catch-up provision on top of that.)

Here’s how it works.

Like any old regular “employee,” you can put away as much as $16,500 of your earnings in a single year.

Plus, as your employer, you can also give yourself something akin to a company “match.” In this case, however, the amount you put in is basically a profit share — equal to 25 percent of compensation or 20 percent of net business profit.

The only additional limit is that your combined contributions cannot exceed $49,000 in 2011 ($54,500 if 50 or older). The employee part must be made during the calendar year, while the employer portion can be contributed as late as April 15th of the following year.

And no matter what way you slice it, these generous limits have tremendous advantages.

For example, high earners who opt for the typical tax-deferred version can potentially lop almost $50,000 off their adjusted gross income in one fell swoop!

Meanwhile, younger workers who would rather watch their nest egg grow tax free for decades to come can sock away tens of thousands of dollars into Roth Solo 401(k) versions that are now available.

Worried about tying up so much money so quickly? Borrowing as much as $50,000 or 50 percent of assets, whichever is less, from these plans is perfectly legal. Just note that not all providers have such a provision in their plan documents.

The other restrictions on these loans are that you have to pay yourself back within a five-year period, no less frequently than four times a year, and with “reasonable interest,” typically defined as prime rate plus 1 percent.

But all in all, if you happen to be working for yourself right now … or even doing a little moonlighting on the side … the Solo 401(k) is very much worth looking into further.

And I recommend doing so before the word really gets out, and tax-hungry politicians find the need to meddle with the currently generous contribution limits!

Best wishes,

Nilus
