Everybody's Talking About 2012

As Dec 21 2012 gets closer the omnipresent cacophony of discussion about the Maya(n) prophecy of 2012 will only increase in volume. With all of the rampant speculation it can be hard to determine what is credible information and what is just fear mongering nonsense manufactured to sell you an overpriced ebook. For instance, what is Nibiru, or Planet X? Does it have anything at all to do with the Nemesis star? Or what about the polar reversal theory? Is there a reason to fear that the Earth's magnetic field is going to rapidly reverse? Roland Emmerich's latest disaster film sure took advantage of some of the most outlandish of these theories, but are they more than wild fantasy?

It is important to keep a level head these days. 2012 is certainly not the first time people have predicted the end of the world. It seems to happen almost every century, millennium, and even decade sometimes. Yet, despite all the people who claim that the end is nigh, the world keeps spinning, and we keep living on it.

Granted, our planet is fragile and in all the known cosmos it is the only place we have found that is suitable to our existence. There are very real potential threats out there. Despite efforts to track objects such as asteroids, the programs we rely on to keep an eye towards the heavens are woefully underfunded. Not to mention the increasing integration and reliance of our society on our technology is unprecedented, and nobody really knows how it might interact with such things as massive solar flares.
