The news from Quebec, Canada was horrifying. A giant sinkhole opened up and swallowed a house and four family members, who were watching TV together.
I lived for a time in central Florida, where sinkholes often occurred due to water collapsing the soft limestone underlying much of that area. But at worst, a section of roadway might crumble or a car would fall into one. Even when a house suffered damage -- which was usually confined to cracks in the foundation -- the people living there had plenty of time to get away if they needed to.
The Quebec sinkhole was a different creature entirely, so huge and devouring that I wonder if it might be another sign of end time events leading up to the cataclysms of the year 2012.
As far as I'm aware, the ancient Mayan prophecies said nothing about sinkholes. But the people who are keeping an eye on earth changes they say such events will intensify as we head toward 2012. A key point they make over and over is that "normal" disasters will give way to ones of unprecedented size and power.
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was really an oil "volcano." The earthquake that struck Haiti was one of the most destructive ever witnessed. And now we have a killer sinkhole.
According to the news reports, the man and woman and their two young daughters had no warning and no time for escape. Their bodies were found close together in the basement of their house. Responders said the sinkhole was so deep that only the roof of the two-story house was visible when they arrived.
You really can't prepare for something like that. But most of the calamitous events that we will live through as 2012 approaches can be anticipated to some degree.
For instance, a financial and political collapse -- a socioeconomic sinkhole, so to speak -- appears inevitable, so now might be a good time to stock up on food, silver and barter items. The upheavals of 2012 need not take us by surprise, if we prepare.
