Taipei, March 24 (CNA) Taiwan's atomic regulator said Thursday that its Chinese counterpart has not responded adequately to a request for cooperation on exchanges of nuclear safety information and the reporting of emergencies.
The Cabinet-level Atomic Energy Council (AEC) said it tried to contact China's National Nuclear Safety Administration via Taiwan's National Security Council last year over proposals in this regard.
However, the Chinese administration "did not demonstrate a proactive attitude," council officials said.
The council wants China to set up what it considers to be a "sufficient number" of radiation monitoring stations around its nuclear power plants and to make its detection data available on the Internet.
It is the council's hope that the recent Japanese nuclear crisis will increase China's willingness to forge a partnership on nuclear issues with Taiwan, the officials said.
The appeal came amid local concerns over the threat to Taiwan posed by more than a dozen planned nuclear power plants in Chinese coastal areas. (By Yang Shu-min and Alex Jiang) ENDITEM/J
