Personal data found on second-hand mobiles

The proliferation of companies offering money in exchange for old mobiles has seen thousands of people search their homes for unwanted phones, hoping to cash in. However, there is a serious security risk involved in handing your phone over to unknown companies. A study by the data protection company CPP has revealed that over half of every second hand phone or SIM card sold online contains sensitive personal data. 54% contained credit or debit card details, PIN numbers, login details for websites, passwords, phone numbers and company information.
