Cumbre Viejo 500 Billion Ton Volcano in La Palma

I am going to write about some good news as soon as I find it. In the meantime we have what lies in the Canary Islands. It is called Cumbre Viejo and it is an active  volcano which boasts a slab of granite on the western side of the caldera which weighs 500 billion tons. It is separating from the main caldera which is one of the largest strato-volcanos in the world.

According to the Discovery Channel, it is a question of when not whether. This monster on the Island of la Palma could generate a tsunami 1800 feet high traveling at the speed of a jetliner. Structural collapse generates much high waves than a mere earthquake. Those on the west coast would have about 8 hours to prepare. The tsunami would still be about 300 feet high or much higher by the time it reached the United States  taking out cities from New York to the Caribbean.

Everyone and everything within 50 miles of the shoreline would be destroyed. That includes all the nuclear plants along the coast. We have seen in Japan just how easy it is to put them back together after a tidal wave. The casualty rate could reach 150 million people in the U.S. alone with lower figures in Britain and Europe.

But don’t worry Cumbre Viejo hasn’t erupted since 1971. At present we have people actually talking about building more nuclear facilities. We are going “clean green” according to the president. Japan has abandoned work at the Fukushima power plant due to out of control radiation.

Japan activist warns another quake looms soon for Japan. Takashi Hirose foresaw in his book last summer, “Nuclear Reactor Time Bomb.” another possible disaster for japan. Hirose expected the hamaoka plant 200 KM from Tokyo to go first however. He bases this on earthquake cycles on the Tokai region. I could be that Japan has more surprises in store. What do you figure the chances are for a happy ending here? I am not even discussing the fact that the earth’s magnetic poles are shifting leading to more instability. He says in effect the Pacific plate is moving, do we think the other 3 or going to stand still?

I count at least 15 or 16 plants within reach of such an occurrence. How many do you count?

Kilauea Volcano Alert Level Orange

Hawaii - Kilauea Volcanic eruption - Alert Level Orange:
http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/activity/kilaueastatus.php

Volcanic Activity Summary: At 1:42 p.m. this afternoon, HVO instruments indicated the onset of rapid deflation at Pu'u 'O'o and increased tremor along Kilauea's middle east rift zone. At 2:00 p.m., Kilauea's summit began to deflate.

Between 2:16 and 2:21 p.m., the floor of the Pu'u 'O'o crater began to collapse, and within 10 minutes, incandescent ring fractures opened on the crater floor a few tens of meters away from the crater wall. As the floor continued to drop, lava appeared in the center of the crater floor, the NE spatter cone collapsed, and an obvious scarp developed on the west side of the crater floor, with lava cascading over the scarp toward the center of the crater.
