Pennsylvania... ALERT!... Rainwater Samples Indicate Radioactive Iodine-131 at 3,300% Above 'Safe' Level!

Governor Tom Corbett emphasized that 'the drinking water is safe and there is no cause for health concerns'... (This man apparently has no clue where drinking water comes from! He's not worried  about radioactive contamination... EPA took care of that... they simply raised the 'safe level' for radioactive Iodine-131 exposure! See related article... ~ SadInAmerica)

Governor Corbett Says Public Water Supply Testing Finds No Risk to Public From Radioactivity Found in Rainwater, Pennsylvania Office of the Governor, March 28, 2011:

[Emphasis Added]

… The [Iodine-131] numbers reported in the rainwater samples in Pennsylvania range from 40-100 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Although these are levels above the background levels historically reported in these areas, they are still about 25 times below the level that would be of concern. The federal drinking water standard for Iodine-131 is three pCi/L. …

On Friday, rainwater samples were taken in Harrisburg, where levels were 41 pCi/L and at nuclear power plants at TMI and Limerick, where levels were 90 to 100 pCi/L.

Corbett emphasized that the drinking water is safe and there is no cause for health concerns. …

“Rainwater is not typically directly consumed,” Corbett said. “However, people might get alarmed by making what would be an inappropriate connection from rainwater to drinking water. By testing the drinking water, we can assure people that the water is safe.” …

Japan... ‘Maximum Alert’!... Over Fukushima Nuke Crisis... Head of TEPCO Vanishes!

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan

Workers at the Fukushima nuclear power plant are working in overdrive, attempting to stop the spread of radioactive materials into the ocean as well as avoid a full scale meltdown. ~ Alex Thomas

In a startling development, Crews found traces of plutonium in the soil outside of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex on Monday, but officials continued to insist there was no threat to public health. Plutonium is highly dangerous and has raised the level of fear tenfold.

Worried? Apparently at least one person now believes that Plutonium is actually good for human health!

Plutonium, one of the most feared radioactive substances on earth, may in fact enhance human health, according to unexpected new findings published in the journal, Health Physics, wrote Lawrence Solomon in the Financial Post.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan rttnews.com has stated that Japan is on Maximum Alert and the situation remains unpredictable and ever changing.

Multiple embassies in Japan have started to pass out potassium iodide tablets as a precautionary measure. These tablets are being distributed in a 250km radius yet Japanese officials continue to claim that potassium iodide is only needed within the 20km evacuation zone.

The difference in opinion between the Japanese government and Foreign embassies is so huge that it seems impossible that Japan is not covering up the extent of this disaster.

“The recommendation by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority that all Swedes who are staying within a radius of 250 km from the Fukushima No. 1 power plant to take iodide tablets every three days is still valid,” the embassy’s website, last updated Saturday, says. “Best protection against radioactive iodine is to take iodide tablets before the exposure, as doing so afterward will prove too late,” reported The Japan Times.

Officials with TEPCO are also facing a major dilemma. They need to cool the reactors with water but at the same time keep the water from contaminating the ocean with toxic radioactive materials.

“TEPCO is in an awful dilemma right now,” said Jim Walsh, an international security expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “One the one hand, they want to cool the reactor and keep the reactor cool, so they have to pour water in. If there is a leak in one of the containment vessels, that water keeps leaking out. So they have a problem where the more they try to cool it down, the greater the radiation hazard as that water leaks out from the plant,” reported the CNN Wire Staff.

Fox News is reporting that TEPCO officials have LOST the battle to save one of the damaged reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

“The indications we have, from the reactor to radiation readings and the materials they are seeing, suggest that the core has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel in unit two, and at least some of it is down on the floor of the drywell,” Lahey told the Guardian.

Meanwhile the Head of TEPCO has all but vanished since a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan on March 11th. He was last seen on the 13th which has led many to speculate that he has left the country.

Amid rumors that Shimizu had fled the country, checked into a hospital or committed suicide, company officials said Monday that their boss had suffered an unspecified “small illness” because of overwork after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake sent a tsunami crashing onto his company’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, reported the Washington Post.

There is no way to tell if Shimizu is actually in Tokyo due to the fact that no one has actually seen him.

Officials in the United States have continued to claim that the levels found in the U.S. are no worse then background radiation, ignoring the simple fact that most of these radioactive particles do not normally occur in the atmosphere at all.

America on radiation alert: Japan faces world’s worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl as experts warn fallout may reach U.S.

By David Derbyshire, Richard Shears and Daily Mail Reporter
15th March 2011

California ‘monitoring situation closely’ amid dramatic escalation of disasterJapan’s nuclear crisis now appears worse than the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1979 – but not yet as bad as Chernobyl in 1986Japan PM tells people within 19 miles of plant to stay indoors as radiation reaches levels that could impact human heathRadioactive wind could reach Tokyo within hours – and radiation levels are already rising in cityNuclear Regulatory Commission admits it is ‘quite possible’ radiation could reach the U.S.‘Worst-case scenario’ could see 30,000ft winds sending nuclear cloud across Pacific – possibly hitting by Tuesday night

Fears that America could be hit by the nuclear fallout from the Japan earthquake have dramatically increased as workers prepared to abandon a reactor crippled by the earthquake and tsunami last night in the face of what is set to become the world’s second worst nuclear disaster – topped only by Chernobyl.

Damage at the number two reactor at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power complex is worse than thought, the Japanese government admitted tonight, sparking fears for human health both in Japan and the U.S.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has admitted it is ‘quite possible’ the fallout could reach America.

Investors on Alert: Japan’s Nikkei Index Crashes 1000 Points In Less than a Week

Japan’s Nikkei Index, which measures the top 225 companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, went into an almost immediate freefall after Tsunami waves began washing up on the country’s northeast coast. The Nikkei 255 Index, which reached a high of 10,600 point on Wednesday, had tumbled to 10,250 points by Friday’s close. The earthquake off the coast of Japan hit at approximately 2:00 PM Japanese time on Friday, March 11.

By close of business Monday, as Japanese officials struggled to maintain order amid a potential nuclear meltdown at multiple reactors, stocks had dropped an additional 650 points, wiping out over 6% of the index’s market capitalization. The country’s central bank, the Bank of Japan, has responded to the disaster by injecting some 15 Trillion Yen ($183 Billion) into the financial system in an attempt to stabilize markets and stem panic.

Other stock markets around the world fared better than Japan as events on the ground, recovery efforts, and the Tsunami’s impact on the Japanese economy remain in question.  Japan is the world’s third largest economy after the European Union and The United States.

With northern Japan in ruin, tens of thousands still missing, and millions without power, Japan will most certainly see negative economic growth in the short-term. If the nuclear reactors, which some Japanese officials say are under control, were to go into complete meltdown and send radiation into surrounding areas and across the Pacific, the economic effects on Japan, Asia and the rest of the world would be felt within days, with stock markets providing a forewarning as panicked investors sell off assets, especially in consumer-related industries like manufacturing, transportation, and retail.

Most stock markets outside of Japan kept losses on Monday to under 2%, however, the legitimacy of the official news reports coming out of Japan are in question, especially with respect to the nuclear power plants. Mixed information has only added to the confusion, with some officials reporting that everything is under control, while others indicate that fuel rods are completely exposed and have melted down, or are in the process of melting down. Radiation exposure has been measured in residents on the ground, as well as on a US Naval vessel traveling through a radiation cloud, and US emergency response helicopters on which 17 members of the US Navy were treated for radiation contamination.

News reports continue to be mixed, leading to uncertainty, but not yet complete panic, in financial markets. Gold and other precious metals, which are considered to be measures of not just inflation, but global crisis sentiment, have seen minor gains on Monday suggesting that global investors have not yet shifted capital into safe haven assets.

With an already failing economic recovery in the US, a black swan variable such as the Japanese quake, Tsunami and nuclear crisis may very well be the tipping point that sends the entire world into a financial and economic catastrophe.

Kilauea Volcano Alert Level Orange

Hawaii - Kilauea Volcanic eruption - Alert Level Orange:
http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/activity/kilaueastatus.php

Volcanic Activity Summary: At 1:42 p.m. this afternoon, HVO instruments indicated the onset of rapid deflation at Pu'u 'O'o and increased tremor along Kilauea's middle east rift zone. At 2:00 p.m., Kilauea's summit began to deflate.

Between 2:16 and 2:21 p.m., the floor of the Pu'u 'O'o crater began to collapse, and within 10 minutes, incandescent ring fractures opened on the crater floor a few tens of meters away from the crater wall. As the floor continued to drop, lava appeared in the center of the crater floor, the NE spatter cone collapsed, and an obvious scarp developed on the west side of the crater floor, with lava cascading over the scarp toward the center of the crater.
